Hotpoint RLA51 fridge keeps freezing up

A fridge makes cold air in the freezer only and blows it into the fridge throu a little air door with a small fan, one of your temerature adjustments will open and close this little door and the other ajustment (the thrmostate) will turn on and off the compressor at what ever temperature you have it set for. if the little door is closed to much the cold air can not get into the fridge fast enough to make the temperature cold enough to turn of the thermostate. This will cause items to freeze near the air door as the air comming out of it will be something like -20C. to fix this it sometimes helps to open this little door more... something like "freezer temp warmer" and also to turn the "fridge temp warmer". if that does not do it, then the thermostate may be faulty, to test it slowly turn it down untill the fridge turns off, if it only turns off at the off position, replace it. also one last thing , sometimes the airdoor can frost up and restrict the air from blowing into the fridge, so you can unplug the fridge and leave the doors open for the weekend and let everything thaw out. then set all the controls for normal and plug back in. Make sure you do not leave the unit plugged in or sometimes the little door light can get so hot it may melt the plastic lining in the fridge.

Frig is 11 months old. ice is forming on vegetables in the bottom right crisper despite turning refrigerator down to 2 from 5 factory setting. this did not happen for the first 8 months. any suggestions?

Try turning freezer control to 7 and check 24 hrs.

Why ??? the freezer control is usualy the damer door control between the freezer and freshfood side... by turning the freezer up you will be closing the door to the freshfood side giving it less freezing cold air. :)

If this does not solve your problem the you will have a Thermostat control problem.

The freezer side does not freeze on the top shelf. The refrigerator freezes everything in the bottom but reads 47 degrees and doesn't cool the top shelves. The fan under the fridge runs fine.

Behind the back wall of the freezer about halfway down, probably behind the light bulb (if there is one there) there is a fan. My guess is that the fan isn't working, or is slow. To test, open the freezer door, then hold the door switch closed and listen for the fan.

This fan should be blowing air up the back of the freezer, and send some of the cold air through a vent at the top of the freezer into the fridge. The air then descends through the fridge and reenters the freezer through a vent at the bottom. If the fan is broken, or if the upper vent is somehow blocked or broken, the cold air will enter (rather than exit) the fridge side at the bottom vent. Because cold air tends to descend and warm air rises, the cold air will freeze the stuff at the bottom of the fridge, and the thermostat (at the top of the fridge) will say it is warm.

I have a GE GSS25LGMF side x side refrigerator. The compressor never shuts off and everything in the fridge section is freezing. Is this a thermostat problem?

it could be the damper part number WR49X10091,if the damper door isn't closing correctly cold air will just keep coming into the fridge side from the freezer, usually the damper door opens to let the cold air in when the fridge starts warming up and when it gets cold enough the door will close but your damper is stuck open

Water wont dispense but still makes ice. Also fridge side gets extremely cold no matter the settings and freezes stuff in the bottum drawers

Since your freezer control is the main thermostat , and your refrig control is only a damper , lower your freezer setting and turn the refrig control mid way . This will make the refrig run less , and keep the air flow moving , throughout the complete unit . When the airflow stops , by turning down the refrig control ( closing the damper ) , all the cold air will settle in the refrig section , thereby freezing everything in the lower section .
Since the water line runs thru the freezer door , too cold in the freezer section , will cause the water in the line to freeze . I would also suggest installing a dispensor heater ( pt. # WR49X10173 ) , which would hopefully avoid water line freeze , in the future . This part comes with installation instructions .

Refrigerator freezes everything even on low setting

Is it a single or double door? Assuming it is a double door. Normally the upper grade models have an auger motor that opens and closes electronically depending on temperature demand. This auger situated at the top LSD of the fridge normally freezes up due to various reasons. Most common is, product is placed to close to outlet which in turn creates a blow back effect and seizes the mechanism. Need to defrost fridge section for about 2 hours for ice to melt. Retry.
If it is a single door, your thermostat needs replacement. I'm taking it you have adjusted the settings higher(not so cold) but still not correct.

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp ..

OR
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.
