My Western Digital external hard drive is not being read by the comp, I had to restore to factory setting 3 times now when this happened to get the driver well as other reasons. It worked the first 2 times, but not now. I called Western Digital and was told I can send it back in to be repaired as it is under warranty. I said I have had this problem before and was only told The book runs fine with Vista. I do not agree with them obviously as this is not the first time. I always look on WD web page however have yet to even see that they are working on fixing the Vista issue.

You need to reinstall the drive. If you didn't have the WB drive you download it from here:

I keep messaging them about something to possibly fix it (I'm having the same problem, too), and I explain EVERYTHING I have done, and they just tell me to reinstall the driver again.  I have Vista, and under my products registration section on the site, there is a section that says:
Download Restricted Software Legal Disclaimer: To provide you with faster and reliable downloads WD has partnered with Mirror Image. By clicking on the download link you agree to Mirror Image's Acceptable Use and Privacy Policy.
However, nowhere on the page is a download link for the driver...nor a download link for anything else.  I have too many important documents on that thing to get rid of it...I guess all I can do is sit here and wait (for what seems like a miracle).

Unfortunately, if there is no driver for Vista, the only thing you can do is go to google and search something like this: "Western Digital My Book" +Drivers +Vista. Make sure to include the quotes on the certain parts, and the + signs. You might find a homemade driver, but they may not be completely reliable, and some may crash you computer if your not careful. I would wait until a final release came out for the Vista Drivers. They have to make some soon otherwise they would loose a big chunk of buisness, so my advice is to wait.

My card cannot boot correctly in my computer

Follow same process for your card file and save to your desktop. Use a file compression software to unzip the file located inside to your desktop. You will now see a file called "MyBook_vista_windows7_Driver_1.00.01.exe" or "MyBook_vista_windows7_Driver_1.00.01" on your desktop. Double-click on "MyBook_vista_windows7_Driver_1.00.01.exe" or "MyBook_vista_windows7_Driver_1.00.01" to launch the driver installation program. The wizard will display a message saying that it is ready to install the driver, click Next. Accept the license Agreement and click Next Click Install to start the installation of the drivers. The driver will be installed without further interaction and should take only a few seconds to install. When the installation is finished, click Finish to close the installation utility. Reboot the computer system before connecting the My Book Essential or Premium Edition hard drive. After connecting the My Book Essential or Premium Edition hard drive, Windows will automatically detect the unit and a new hard drive icon will appear in the My Computer window. Your My Book Essential or Premium Edition hard drive should now be ready to use.

Cant find and open to reformat

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.

Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.
Known as "The Click Of Death"

If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section

New external harddisk cant be detected on my computer

Since you have not given any specifications about model of your HDD hence I'd consider your HDD connects through USB. Your USB driver is old you shall consider upgradation.

Go to My Computer on your PC and look for a drive other than C.
More likely it will be the last drive listed. You can click on it to see what is on it.

Yes. The case doesn't care what size the drive is. The computer is just asking for the USB driver for the case. Check the WD site for the driver for the model of MyBook that you have. That should cover it.

Win98se i did it ... HERE'S HOW

OK, I bought this Western Digital MyBook 500 GB Essential Edition too, and could not get it to work with Windows 98 SE.

I followed the above instructions, but my version of windows was missing even the drivers suggested above! UGH!

HOWEVER, I found ANOTHER SOLUTION. I installed USB 2.0 drivers for mass storage and the the MY BOOK icon popped up on my Windows 98 SE machine. Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

Here are the drivers from this british webpage:

Good luck to all you frustrated folks scooping your info off Windows 98 machines!
