Your first check should be the add/remove applet in Control Panel. Uninstall any programs that you no longer use. This is the safest way to free up space.
You only need to delete any files that you don't need, and then empty the recycle bin. But be very careful what you delete, or you may find your computer wil no longer run. You don't need a special program to do this.

How to Speed up a Slow Mac

Apple Mac computers can also become slow and sluggish with time and use. So here I will show you four methods to speed up your old-slow-mac.

Method 1: Free up hard drive space
You might have stored many huge video files, thousands of photos and music tracks on our Mac computer. The popularity of using solid-state drives (SSDs) of Mac computers means considerably less capacity than traditional hard drives.

1. Find the large media files on your Mac, delete the unused videos, apps, photos, etc. Or you can move all of them to an external hard drive, and remove them from your Mac.

2. Empty your trash cans, say the user account's main trash can and the iPhoto/iMovie/Mail trash can.

3. Remove junk files from your old Mac, MacClean is the way to go. It helps removing Internet junk, user junk, system junk and application junk on your hard drive.

Method 2. Free up more RAM

Most Macs ship with between 4GB and 16GB of RAM. If your Mac has only 4GB or 8GB RAM, the system might be running low when launching programs or loading document.
Step 1. Open up Terminal: ~/Applications/Utilities.
Step 2. Enter the command: Purge, and tap the enter tab.
Step 3. Give your Mac a minute or two to complete the process.
Open up Activity Monitor to see the before and after results, you'll find the Free size increases in System Memory.

Method 3. Kill Unwanted login items

Step 1. Open up System Preferences, and click the Users & Groups.
Step 2. Click the Login Items tab, and you'll see a list of apps that open every time you turn on Mac.
Step 3. Select the login items you want to kill, and click the "-" button to remove them.

Method 4. Clean up your desktop

1. Delete the files you don't need any more, and empty the Trash.
2. Classified the files on your mac, and move them to some folders.
3.Name the folder so that you can easily find the one you need. Why Is My Mac So Slow and How to Fix It

Looks as if the disk is full and after logging on it requests me to format the disk and won't let me access in order to delete unwanted files.

Could you please give more details
- Is it an external drive? / USB etc?
- what operating system is your computer?

Have you tried running the disk clean up wizard?
(On windows goto computer then right click the drive then goto properties then tools then click the button disk cleanup)

Am trying to download a pattern (and tried various patterns I had purchased and kept on my laptop) and message "memory full" keeps appearing even though I have no patterns saved. What's up?

Well I think the first and most obvious solution is deleting unwanted files you don't use and have made redundant whether this be media, documents. pictures films and so on.
you can also do a disc clean up plus a defrag.
its sounds as if you are running out of space.
what windows are you running?
how big is your hard drive.
how much ram have you got?
go and look at the size of your hard drive and see how much space is left on it.
but it does sound like not a lot of space left to download anything.
there is more you can do to free up space but lets start with what I have put.
if its none of the above please let me know.

Trying to transfer data from an old harddrive i have (maxtor, diamondmax plus 9 80 GB ATA / 133 HDD) to My HP laptop

Install the hard drive into an USB hard drive adapter case the plug this USB hard drive into the USB port in your laptop. The laptop will see it as an external storage device, open the various folders and copy the files to your laptop.
You can delete any unwanted files off this external USB hard disk and use it for backups and file transfer.

Unable to load software for esp3250 on to my dell inspiron 6000 laptop results say not enough memory but i have 57% spare

Please try and see the properties of all the drives specially the C drive , if the space is low then check for unwanted files, clean and defragment the PC.
Remove or un-install unwanted program files, clean and remove all temporary files, downloads and history. If possible use a registry cleaner along with a anti-virus scan to clean up the system.
Finally un-install any conflicting printer software's if installed from the PC.
This must make your PC clean and ready to install the software.

Software work to slow and it shot down

Software Installation : Installing more and more software can make the computer slow down. The reasons for that are that installation of a software will make entries in registry and that is somewhat bad. The software may be running in the startup. The software will install various files on the computer and an overloaded hard disk makes the computer slow.
Free up disk space : Try to keep your hard disk space free. You’ll always notice that a computer with free space on hard disk will always run much faster than the one which is loaded with extra stuff.
* Remove Unwanted Items From Startup : Well, if you’ll remove the unwanted softwares from the startup then your computer will boot up much faster and the memory (RAM) will also remain free and thus that will again result in better computing experience
Run hard disk maintenance utilities : Always run the utilities like Disk Defragmentation or Disk checking utilities regularly, around once in 2 weeks
Run Registry Cleaner : Right, this one is related to first tip. In case you’ve already installed and uninstalled various softwares before reading this tutorial then you can go ahead and run various registry cleaning softwares

Need to drop email account

Their might be various spams, bulk and junk emails that might have got accumulated over the time of the usage of the Dell Hard Disk, according to me many unwanted and unrecognised programs such as WORM/Virus and the possiblity is that the email's constant traffic of new mails and Various E-bombs coming in might have conflicted with the Dell Hard Drive as they bring with them certain copied patches and files that get accumulated in the hard disk and so the hard disk faces problems in functioning properly. Thus, often giving certain messages like ' The Email/ISP is blacklisted' or 'Need to Drop email account'.In general the Email might be conflicting with the configuartion of the sytem and/or with the Space of the Dell Hard Drive.
