My window ac unit was working fine until I turned it off. Now, it wont power back on. Any ideas?
Hi, and yes, I do have some ideas that may be of help to you. I have to ask this first of course, have you checked to see if you have power to the unit at the receptical and or breaker? May have not had equalized pressures in the system causing it to draw high or excessive amperage on start up and tripping a breaker? If you haven't checked this, please start there for me? "Thank You" If you do have power to the unit and lets say as I don't no, can you hear anything when you call for cooling with the control T-stat on face of this unit, or nothing at all is happening? Lets say you have power but nothing is taking place as I think that is what you have said, It may be as simple as a control wire at the control connections is loose or may have come off or even burned off as they do pull high amps. You would have to remove knobs, front face cover, and may even have to remove all perimeter screws around the front inside, as the way to excess controls on a window unit, it slides into a case..Anyway, If you are willing to go these extra steps we may be able to locate what the cause of the problem fairly easy. If this unit is a a/c only and no heat, you will have many less controls to worry about checking out. To be honest, without a mulitimeter and some knoledge of electrical experience, It will be a pretty much take a good look over all parts and wiring for you? As look for any signs of hot spots in the exposed wiring, burned areas on controls right where you're main wires or power cord comes into the thermostat control. This would be the begining of the cooling cycle to start the unit on a call from the stat. You will need to find the main power which I would be certain this is a 208/220, 230, 240, volt unit.Wiring would consist of 2 hot legs, maybe red and black with a possable white and for sure a solid green for grd. coming out this power cord.Unit is most likely on a double pole 30 amp circuit breaker. Be careful around capacitors even with the power off to unit as they store enough volts to send you into cardiac arrest or give you a heck of a jolt as I tend to find out on occation when I forget to discharge one before testing it.You can use a screw driver to touch across terminal to the other side terminals and this will discharge them. Basicly, we need to determine if there is the right voltage coming in to the control, is it leaving the control when you turn it on? With out a meter, if the control is intermittently operating, you should hear or even see the condenser/indoor fan motor try to start. Lets stop hear, as if you have power to this control and nothing at all is happening, this control stat has probably failed on you. If you are able to check any of the things, breaker, any power coming out of the control at any point to control to ground, get back to me. I tend to give rather long solutions for my people out there, but we can solve this together I am sure. So I will stop and wait for an update from you.
