Canon Powershot SX10 IS auto focus unreliable

Canon Powershot SX10 IS auto focus seems unreliable. I first noticed the problem when zooming in with video mode. Now I am seeing it frequently in still shots, even wide-angle landscape scenes or close-ups that should be no-brainers to focus. I have tried various auto focus settings, but can't seem to fix the problem. Is there a firmware fix for this?

I don't this its an error. I have used this Canon SX10 IS Camera for nearly a year now I haven't had this kind of problem.

Usually auto focus take few seconds to focus on object depending on distance and lighting. That might be the problem ?

I'm have a focus problem with the SX110 IS. I have more than average camera skills and doubt it is user error.

Same here. It used to autofocus fine, but often fails to focus properly at all, especially macro, but even normal conditions. I'm guessing it's just the age of the camera. Tech isn't designed to last more than 2 years anymore. But, I'd love to hear a fix for it!

The focus is very poor. Repeated pushing shutter

I believe you must had experienced this in Auto mode. This can happen when camera is too close to the object or coz of other problems. Didn't you try manual modes like AV or TV modes ?

My Canon PowerShot SD1000 won't focus. Most

Sounds like you may not be in "Auto" mode. Press the "Func/Set" button, then press Right or Left to select the "Auto" mode.

Sometimes it takes a few seconds before my Canon Powershot SX10 IS will take a picture I have button pushed down but it won't take the picture?

Unfortunately that's how the camera is designed.
The camera has to do a number of things before it will take a picture. It has to check the lighting, and focus and make calculations based on those factors about how to set the camera to take the best picture.
It is best practice to get your subject in view. depress the shutter button half way and hold it so it can focus and determine the exposure, and then completely press the button the rest of the way to release the shutter.
Good luck

Older Vivitar Flash for new Canon SX10

Not compatible.
Get slave triggers and use them as remote flashes, or buy another film camera.
It seems Vivitar no longer is in the flash business. Get a Sigma or Sunpak digital flash for your SX10
