Question about Sony Xplod XM-554ZR Car Audio Amplifier
I have a sony XM 554ZR 600 watt amp and the power protect light goes from green to red almost immediately after I turn it on. Any idea whats wrong?
They go into protect for several reasons. Unless you are a trained technician you should not try to repair it yourself. It may have a blown channel. Disconnect the speakers and try turing it on again. If it still goes into protect you have a serious problem. If it does not go into protect, you may just have a bad speaker, or have the impeadance too low for that amp. The smartest thing to do would be to take it to a repair center and have them test it to find out if the problem is in the amp or in the wiring/speakers.

I had a few sony amps, and they don't do well as far as i am concerned. I have experienced them doing the same thing for no apparent reason. One minute they are working fine and the next, they are done. What is happening is that the mosfets are burning out inside the amp which causes them to go into protect mode. Make sure you go by the specs on that specific amp. Usually most amps don't go under 2 ohms stereo and 4 ohms mono. A lot of people start to experiment and notice if they hook-up a certain way, they produce a lot more bass. Sometimes that few minutes of great bass burns out a mosfet or two which kills the amp.
