Question about Sony KV-20S20 20" TV

1 Answer

Sony Trinitron KV-20S20

TV is 12 years old. Just developed horizontal white bands with black diagonal strips across the screen. The bands do not fill the entire screen – probably 40%. This problem appears after a couple of minutes or can be intermittant or just turn to snow. Also, loud static noise. Can this be easily fixed or is it shot?

Did not address the actual problem. What causes this?

This can't be the only TV that's ever had this problem.

Thanks. That answers my question and confirms my hunch that

it is not worth putting good money after bad!

My experiance is to not put money into a TV that is over ten years old. TVs stress out their electronic components worse than almost any other electronic product. After 10 years, there are so many parts that are ready to fail that your are probably wasting your money trying to get any more life out of it.
Another option is to wholesale replace the main board by sending it to Module Exchange at 972-298-1212, or PTS Electronics 800-844-7871 ptscorp.com.
Be careful on buying a new one though. Often times, these new technology ones are much worse. Always Google the model number of the set you intend to buy and add the word 'repair' or 'complaint' to see if it is one of the many models that are customer service nightmares being produced by even the most reputable companies today.
Hope ya fix it!

What you are seeing are called "hum bars". The scan rate of TV's
is 60hz, same as the 120V line frequency. There are many
capacitors in a TV that filter the power going into the circuitry to
keep this line frequency out. As the capacitors dry out with age
they start to leak and let in the interference and you get these hum
bars. It is difficult if not impossible to track down which one
of them is the problem. One of the main reasons not to fool with
    fixing old TVs.

My Sony trinitron tube Tv 36" seems to be going (its 10 years old

no ....the tube will end up after 20 yrs in 10 yr old sony...
it is worth if u fix it. randomly going black means...horizontal driver trans former is the problem..or any loose contact with the 110 volt supply to that transformer,,or any loose contact with line o/p transformer.. (horizontal driver transformer may be gone
then tv behaves like this) if any other parts gone tv wont come back.... there may be a loose contact call a service pro..

Fine interference lines running diagonally across picture.

Hi There,
Sounds like your Horizontal Output Circuit is leaking current causing diagonal lines across the screen. I hope this will help and thank you for using FixYa!

Sony Trinitron 29inch Color TV

The 2 blinks are an indication of over-current. This is usually because of a shorted component. The most common is the horizontal output transistor. This will be a 3-legged part attached to a heat sink close to the flyback transformer (part with red wire coming out the top). This transistor will be marked C4856 or something similar. Update this with the exact marking and I'll provide you with the full part number and approximate cost.

It sounds to me like you're describing the re-trace of the unit. It is repairable, and more so the sooner you get it to the repair facility.
