Have had package for17 months. fine until last weekend. speed then suddenly dropped from 1.1 to 608. Now cannot get orange home page or several bank sites, national lottery, doctor's surgery. can get lloyds tsb, the environment agency, orange search. I am disgusted with orange's technical support and the cost of it. I am seriously thinking of changing ISPs. Any suggestions on how to solve the problem. I can get the whole internet on my laptop from another ISP.

This is all you need (plus any additional sensors) to know the last status of your sensors when you are home or away from home. The HomeKey takes a "snapshot" of the last sensor status as you leave your house. This gives you the peace of mind knowing that you really did unplug the curling iron or shut the garage door.
The HOMEheartbeat Starter Pack contains the Base Station, a HomeKey, and an Open/Closed Sensor. Everything you need to get started. You simply plugin the Base Station and program your sensor(s) with your HomeKey.
Note: Full use of this product to view your sensors status live requires the Broadband Gateway Extender with a high-speed internet connection and monthly Service Plan. A home telephone line (not a cellular phone) can be used if you purchase Remote Alert packages through Eaton's HOMEheartbeat web site.
PPP should be refering to PPPOE (or point to point protocal over ethernet). PPPOE is the method that a DSL modem logs into an ISP. So essentially their log in server is down, and since your modem is unable to connect to their login server you cannot get online.
This sounds like a problem entirely on their end, and unfortunately you're pretty much at their mercy in regards to when it gets fixed.
My only suggestions other than just waiting it out is look into another ISP or purchase a wireless card and a large antenna and see if you can pick up an open network close to your location. The later option is entirely based on you lucking out and picking up a connection close by though, it's possible nobody near you is sharing an open wireless connection.
This is only a suggestion you might want to replace the modem after all you have had a good use out of it I think its finally tiring out?
REPLACE IT you'll have much more fun with a newer one not to mention YEARS of fun.
