Type of dremel to use for computer case modding

Hello,

i'm just starting a new hobby of computer case modding and I'm just wondering what the best type of dremel to use. I'll be drilling small holes for M3 screws and cutting away at ABS plastic.I will also be sanding and polishing the ABS plastic as well. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ron

I would recommend going to Dremel.com and asking their tech section about this. I have one also and mine works fine other than a small amount of heat at the spindle area.

Dremel stylus 1100 (No Charger)

First you need to get an equivalent charger and some type of male/female or contact harness. This will have to have at least three pins as that is what is already on the Dremel. Now the difficult decision, do you want to open up the Dremel if it's still under warranty? If you don't mind opening it then my solution will work. Open up the Dremel and look at the inside of the contacts. As this is a DC charger it can only have positive and negative terminals. You say there are three contacts, so there will either be two positive and one negative or two negative and one positive. Most likely there will be a bridge wire between the two terminals with the same polarity. Strip a little of the insulation from the terminal wires and solder new leads to your contact harness. Noting the polarity of each pin/contact on the new harness wire the other part of the contact harness to the charger. You will most likely have to make a small hole in the Dremel's outer cover to allow the wires to pass through. As you own a Dremel I'm sure you are capable of attempting this easy bit of DIY. There is only one problem, If the third contact plate is a return signal to the charging base it might be to inform the charger when the battery is full. In this case the terminals inside the Dremel will not be bridged and I suggest you buy a new or secondhand charger. Hope this helps

I was using a brand new Dremel 4000 with saw attachment to rip a 3 foot length o 1/2" thick mahogany. 2 feet into it the appliance stopped running. Do they overheat? Is there a reset switch?

My friend ... my first inclination is to say 'Are you kidding me?' My Craftsman 'skill' saw with 7 inch blade has its hands full ripping 3 feet of 1/2 thick mahogany and you are using what is essentially a hobby tool and you question is will it over heat? You are lucky it didn't burst into flame!

I don't know if this particular model is thermo protected or not. If it comes back on, we can guess there is a device inside to protect it. If not, it is probably taps for the Dremel.

While the Dremmel is a wonderful tool it is not intened for this kind of work. My fear is you have burned it up. I use my Dremel saw to cut pine and balsa for modeling, (cars, boats, planes) and other little projects. I use the little sanding drums for the same, as well as polishing. The little rasps are great for cleaning and cutting. Not intended to rip lumber for a furniture project.

I'm sorry your Dremmel met a early demise and I hope I have answered your question. Please do not kill the messenger. Thank you for your interest in FixYa.com
