Question about Televison & Video

Fluid Mold I am repairing a Magnavox model # FP4650 W102 projection screen television. The blue and green fluid guns have molded and the t.v. shows a red picture. I have been unable to find a repair/service manual. I need to know the corrrect procedure to drain, clean and refill the guns. Also, there are 'lines' across the bottom 2" of the picture, could this be related to the mold problem?

Yes it more than likely is related to the spill.
this model is famous for fluid leaks. each projectorFluid Mold - 1.gif tube has a reservoir on the front of it with a fluid in it. this keeps the face of the tube cool.
this depends on how bad the damage is in the tv. in most cases we can reseal the tube and clean up the fluid 400-600.
Once you
take the tube out you will see where it leaked. The problem is that the
frame on the CRT that the heavy screws with springs are mounted on (that
hold the lens coupled to the CRT) is weak and they can bend. We have seen
several that have leaked after the customer moved the set. You can only
tighten them down so much because the frame bends. It is just stamped metal
and not welded at the corners to support the bend.

We remove the CRT, clean it all up, add a very small amount of RTV sealer to
the gasket, reassemble, let the RTV cure thoroughly and refill with coolant.
The extra sealer should prevent future leaks. Haven't had a recall yet.
Mits says replace the CRT...too costly.

You msut check the yokes carefully as well. If any coolant gets into them
you can end up with shorts there and a mess.

Clean the boards carefully and repair any corrosion damage. The coolant is
ethylene glycol and glycerine which is water soluable.

You will have to determine which of the picture tubes has contaminated fluid. To do this, you have to pull the screen off and see which tube is blurry. You will find a red, green and blue tubes when the set is on. To learn how to remove and replace the fluid, please check the following web site. www.TVRepairKits.com. Be sure you have the model number and know the symptoms you describe to repair this. Thanks for asking and show all hands of support!

My screen has a wave to it at the bottom it shows 2 levels one pink and i green

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Only red tube shows picture, but green & blue are on, just no pic

More likely the problem is the blue and green fluid in the tubes is so cloudy that its distorting the image. Get a fluid kit from www.tvrepairkits.com

Screen is getting darker

The most likely cause is the blue and green tubes need to have the cooling fluid changed. After many years the blue and green get clouded with algae. The red tube won't have the problem due to the red spectrum kills the algae before it has time to grow.

The way to replace the fluid for is to completely remove each CRT from the set, remove the drain plug, drain the fluid out the tube, disassemble the lens, give it a good cleaning; then reassemble; add fluid; and reinstall in set. If you check with the site www.TvRepairKits.com they are working on a kit that includes the fluid and photo instruction guide.

60" Projection Tv - Approx 6 yrs old

Your CRT fluid needs to be replaced. After many years the crt cooling fluid gets a ton of alage built up in the tubes.  This will cause the screen to get a halo effect or get darker.

You only need to replace the fluid in the blue and green tubes.
