I want to be able to use symbols such as 1/4 1/2 3/4 etc.
I have the same problem.
This Problem has been added to the Share Your Expertise Page under "My Work Queue".

Hello, check out the home page http://www.asciitable.com/

If you look in the section called Extended ASCII codes, you will find some of your wanted characters. Now, in order to write some of them, for example ¼, you must make sure your numeric keyboard is activated (a light is turned on). Then press the Alt-key (next to the spacebar) and KEEP it down, while you write 172. Now you can release the Alt-key.
