I had the same problem. I could not fix it at home, so I sent it to HP for repair. It was still under warranty, so I didn't have to pay for anything.
My issue was the motherboard was faulty. I noticed that the laptop actually works better than when I first got it in May 2007, meaning that the problem ws probably there all along, I just didn't know it.
Call them up, they will send you a box and you can ship it back. HP is aware of the problem adn they have extended the warranty on the dv9000 laptops for 24 months. It took 9 days for me to get it back. They retained all my data on my hard drives.
