Could be dirty heads if you have a dry head cleaner tape try it (Maxell and RCA make ok tapes to try for ~:30-1min) ALSO:
There is a delay in the time you adjust the tracking and
the results being visable on the screen on this unit,
I suspect the tracking is adjusted off center. It takes some getting used to the way this deck's tracking adjustment works as the VHS video is upconverted to be captured onto the dvd and that is what you see, the upconverted video, fed out to your TV, analog or digital, this unit upconverts everthing to digital even analog channels, there needs to be a noise/blue screen off feature in the menu like my old hitachi VHS deck and my JVC ~$60 deck has now. On analog TV or old tapes it comes in handy for adjusting the tracking/antenna.

Can't get my vhs tapes to play. all i have is blue screen

The screen will mute to a blue colour when there is no signal, which could mean the video heads are dirty or there is another fault.

I have a Panasonic DMR-ES35V and all is working great except it recently started showing only a blue screen when I try and play a VHS tape. Doesn't matter what kind of tape, home movie or professional it...

You can try cleaning the video heads and tape path within the VCR deck. If this doesn't fix it, then the heads are worn, or there is a fault with the head amplifier (this is part of the motherboard and nearly all surface-mounted components).

I would go with the simplest option first: check the condition of the heads, if dirty, clean them with commercially available head cleaning products such as isopropyl alcohol (IPA) head cleaning solution.

Re: dvr5000; vhs tapes have sound but no picture

If you have blue screen or snow on the tv, it means the video head is dirty. Use a wet or dry cleaning tape, I recommend the dry because it is easier on the mechanism. The other option is to buy a store bought blank tape T120 and set the vcr to sp and let it run the full two hours.

The VHS tapes will not playback on the Samsung TV (flat screen)..the Samsung TV is a Syncmaster 2333 HD...the Samsung dvd/vhs unit is a DVD-V9800 The DVD discs will play just fine. How should I be...

On these combo units, the VCR will not play using component cables but the dvd's will play just fine.

What you need to do is run a pair of composite (Yellow, red and white) cables and use that for VCR and component (Green, blue, red, white and red) for the dvd player.

Make sure you switch the tv to the corresponding input.

VCR WON'T RECORD

you may have the outputs hooked up correctly however you may need to set the inputs to the selected type of cable you are using. S video 1 cable or video input witch is an rca adapter yellow in color. you will find these setting in the "setup section" on the remote set up button will get you there and then input or source.

Stuck in Progressive Scan Mode...please help!

There should be a switch on the DVD player that is makred 'progressive/interlaced.' You need to flick this switch til it says interlaced, as obviously your TV cannot view progressive signals. It may be on the back of the player, or under a flap on the front.

Vhs playback problem

either extremely dirty heads or there is a tv/vcr button that needs to be toggled. Most have auto tracking, old ones have a knob or 2 buttons under a panel somewhere for tracking.

Video image problem- Blue screen?

If your unit is fairly new, your VCR part might be the problem.Take it back!
If you have this unit for awhile, two things:
1. You need a professional A/V repair guy to clean up and check your VCR head.
2. The rental VHS tape is dirty.
Good luck!
