if the player will no longer read any commercial dvd that you attempt to play, the unit is defective and needs to be replaced. Hopefully, since it's brand new, you still have the receipt and can return it to the retailer for an exchange or refund. The unit has a 90 day warranty from the date of purchase. You would need the receipt in order to receive a warranty exchange.

it might be that you are playing a dual layer dvd in the player. The player needs to focus on the second layer of the movie, and that might be why the dvd freezes. Leave it there for a while and the dvd should continue if it is this situation.
Well I have been repairing dvd players a while now and the main problem spots are laser ,spindle motor, laser tracking motor and the biggest culprit and un suspecting one the lens cable .....most of them range from the lens cable to the spindle motor though... the constant movement of the lens in watching a whole movie causes the cable to unknowingly and slowly break and if the spindle motor is defective ,on inserting a dvd the disc spins slowly and you may hear the lens chirping ... so you can check those....
