Question about Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959K Top Load Washer

Calypso Washer, seems unable to turn drum or agitate

Our Calyspso washer seems to have had it. It was eating laundry by pulling it down around the edges and getting stuck beneath the agitator. We bought a new one, but it still pulls items down.
Now it will fill with water, but will not turn. There is a humming sound and eventually we get a C1 error code (the one that says the motor is pulling to many amps and shuts down). I pulled off the agitator and the plastic hub underneath is somewhat melted and you can see some metal (perhaps a bolt or washer) underneath.
Thoughts on what needs to be replaced?
Thanks.

I haven't had the problem with the washer tearing up my clothes as of yet but I have with the c1 error code. According the the manual there are three possibilities. 1- Bad drive motor 2- Bad thermal protector ( solution to fix replace the drive motor) 3- Bad motor control board. The last one was what needed to be replaced in mine.

Smells like belt is burning in 1st load of laundry. smells hot

The belt or belts transfers power from the motor to the transmission and pump. If the belt fails, the washer will be unable to pump out the water in the drum nor will it be able to spin the drum or operate the agitator. The washer will sound as if something is running (the motor) but everything under the lid will remain motionless.

The belt is a replaceable part. If you smelled the belt burning, chances are it has been stretched or is missing chunks and is damaged. It should be replaced after unplugging the washer and disconnecting the supply hoses. Next, determine that nothing is jammed and everything moves as it should. This would be the pump and the transmission. You'll probably have to turn the washer on its side to access the belts. Be prepared to mop up water that will spill once laid on its side. If pump or transmission is jammed, the motor will probably burn up the new belt, too. Make sure nothing is preventing the agitator from working - this could be clothing wrapped around / under the agitator. It is possible that something has become lodged in the pump housing. You won't be able to see it - but you should be able to turn the pump - if either of these won't turn, you'll need to get them turning freely before you can expect the motor to spin the belts.

I hope this helps and good luck! Please rat emy reply. Thank you.

Washer drum bangs from front to back

This may be a drum or agitator problem. Possibly bad bearings or coupler

Servicing the Tub and Agitator

Replace a damaged agitator
with a new one of the same type.
Unscrew the cap on top of the
agitator and pull straight up;
the agitator should lift off.

The washing machine tub, or basket, generally doesn't cause problems. However, at times it may cause damage to the laundry, make a lot of noise, vibrate, or stop completely.

If laundry is torn during the wash cycle, feel around the tub. If you find a rough spot, you may be able to smooth it with an emery board. Sand the spot lightly. If this doesn't work -- or if you have to cut to bare metal to remove the roughness -- the tub should be replaced. In this case, it's probably much wiser to replace the entire washer.

The agitator -- the finned part that fits on the tub shaft -- can also tear laundry if the fins are cracked or broken. You may be able to solve the problem temporarily by pinching off the splinters with pliers and lightly filing the plastic smooth, but this is just a stopgap measure; the agitator should be replaced. Replace a damaged agitator with a new one of the same type. To do this, unscrew the cap on top of the agitator. With the cap off, pull straight up on the agitator; it should lift off. If it doesn't move, rap its side with a hammer. If it still won't lift off, drive wedges under the bottom rim of the agitator to dislodge it. Then set the new agitator into place and replace the agitator cap.

Damage to the snubber, a padlike device sometimes located under the agitator cap, can cause the machine to vibrate excessively. The snubber may have a suspension spring in it. Lift off the agitator cap and examine the snubber. If the spring is broken, or if the pad is visibly worn, replace the entire snubber. Snubbers might also be found at the splash guard at the top of the tub, under the transmission, or as part of the water pump housing. Look around until you see it.

If the machine doesn't have a snubber, listen for noise at the suspension unit between the tub and the machine cabinet. The suspension unit has fins or pads that may need replacement. In some cases, the entire unit may have to be replaced. Another noise point is the basket support nut. Tighten the nut or, if you can't tighten it, replace it.

Sudden tub stops can be caused by a broken motor belt, but they are usually due to poor tub loading. Check to see if wet laundry is wadded around the bottom of the tub shaft, or under the basket or agitator assembly. Remove the basket or agitator in order to remove the laundry easily.

Possibly a belt issue take the top cover off of the agitator and remove the bolt that holds it down. There will be gears inside if any of these parts are broken this will also cause it not to agitate. Let me know

The transmission probably stripped the worm gear that drives the drum - you would have to crack it open and take a peek.

Have you checked the agitator? There may be sharp edges on the agitator blades. OR the towels may be getting stuck under the agitator and tub bottom. The agitator is supposed to suck the clothing down in the center and forcibly throw the clothing outwards against the tub. The cycle then repeats.
