I never see the "Press F10 to enter system setup utility". It goes straight to "Non-system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready". Any ideas?

While switching on your system press F10 and the go to the Advanced setup. There you select and press Enter key on change boot order and then change the order by using Page up or page down key. Alternatively you may use Esc key while showing the compaq logo on boot, you will be able to change the Boot Order.

At some time during the powering up process, there will be a display at the bottom that says"at the bottom it says "Press F10 to enter system setup utility". Pls do so to enter CMOS/BIOS configuration. Look for the Boot (Order) page. Once in the page, instructions how to change or move boot priority is usually at the bottom.

Good luck and kind regards.

    Hi again,

Pls try pressing F10 even without the message immediately after powering up before the expected "Non-system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready" shows up.

Alternately, there is a possibility that the hard drive is no longer being detected by the laptop or some of its system files have been corrupted.

Try popping in the CD anyway, might switch to booting from CD since it couldn't from the HD.

Optiplex gx620 2 beeps on start up, displaying 123.

If windows 7 you need to burn a repair disc & run it. Go to Maintenance, creat repair disc (use one CD & mark it with Dell gx62 on top, repair disc run first on bottom)
Restart your computer and hold down escape, F1 or F2 to get into the settings in the CMOS. You must chang the boot order of your startup. In CMOS use arrows to right to Boot to change to CD ROM then HDD so your CD will go into repair before starting the HDD. Each CMOS is different but usually you can use the f5 or f6 to change the order and f10 to exit & save the setting. Restart your computer after you put the repair disc in & that should repair your start up.

Sounds like a disk issue. It kind find the OS so it's then trying to PXE boot (boot from the network). Have you changed the boot order recently? or do you have a USB key connected to your server? are you able to connect to the management interface (hp ilo, dell drac) to see if you had any raid or other hardware issues?

Cannot open my laptop... Did everything from removing the battery, cleaning the fan but still screen says non system disk or disk error replace n strike any key when ready.... Help pls

Please try the following:

1. Remove the non-system disk from your boot device. For example, remove the non-system disk from the CD-ROM drive. If there is no CD or remove the floppy disk from the floppy drive.

2. Change your computer's boot sequence. To do this, you must change your computer's setup and the option that controls which device your computer uses to start from. Make sure that you select a device that has boot files (or operating system files) installed. Normally, this would be your hard drive.

Diskette drive 0 seek failure appears after I changed my cmos battery

Changing the CMOS battery, while necessary, has reset your BIOS to the factory set up. Which means, from your description, that your PC is looking for the operating system on your CD or Floppy drive.

When booting, you should see, at the bottom of the screen, Press F2 for setup or F10 for boot options. They may be different F numbers, but the options should be the same.

Choosing "Setup" means that you'll be permanently changing the BIOS, "Boot Options" will be limited and temporary. You can choose the boot options, get you used to the idea of editing the BIOS, but you will need to update it if you don't want to go through this procedure every time you want access to your PC.

For my part, select the "Setup" option.

Look at the right hand side of the screen, it tells you how to edit the BIOS.

Tab across to "Boot Options" and from the list shown, arrow up/down to "boot device order" or an options with a similar wording.

You now have to set the boot device order, this tells you where your PC is to look for an operating system and there's usually about 4 options.

set to :-

1st boot device - CD drive.
2nd boot device - HDD 0
3rd boot device - external

after this really doesn't matter too much.

This means when booting your pc will look for a CD with operating system first, then your hard drive, finally an external boot system ie usb connected device.

Once your device order is set, hit exit or F10, you will be asked if you want to save the new setting to the BIOS, if you're happy hit Y if not N.

Once complete, your PC should boot normally.

You may want to go back to your BIOS and set up other options, just remember, on exit on select Y to save if you're absolutely sure you got it set correctly.

I got a message that reads Non-System disc or disc error replace and strike any key when ready. What do I do?

Here the reason why youre getting the error message

Remove the non-system disk from your boot device. For example, remove the non-system disk from the floppy drive or the CD-ROM drive.

Change your computer's boot sequence in you Bios. Make sure that you select a device that has boot files (or operating system files) installed.

If you start your computer from a hard disk drive, install a bootable operating system (such as Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7) on the drive.

Thanks for using Fixya
