Question about Creative Labs MegaWorks THX 250D Computer Speakers

1 Answer

Digital out peters with odd blipping noises then stops outputing.

I have the Creative Megaworks THX 250D 2.1 speakers which are excellent, but sometimes the digital out would play fine for a bit then start petering out and some blipping noises then slows down and stops and then no sound. The analog out sounds come out but have loud pops. Any ideas wot I can do to fix this? I have a multimeter so I can check components but I need to know which. Thanks

Hi. Thanks for the reply. Probably should have said hi to all as it was my first post!

Anyway. I dont have the warranty. It was bought off ebay a couple of years ago. The problems seems intermittent, happening 2 or 3 times a year. It usually dissapears if I leave it unplugged for 24hrs. But its annoying neverless. I looked into the 7800 you suggest, but the sub doesnt look as beefy as the 250D and I do like my bass! A 2.1 is fine as I dont have room for another 3 speakers!

I might try contacting Creative and ask if theres a repair center near me or if its ok for any repair place to sort it. I do really love the speakers as the quality is incredible.

Just out of interest, you mention resistors. Do you think that would be the likely culprit?

    Ok. Thanks.

I know for a fact its not down to overheating as its the middle of winter here and I just turned it on this morning and it did it. Its plugged into a surge socket so I would have thought the voltage is smoother.

Ill try a repeair shop and see what they say.

    Cheers.

Hello there
First things first:

* this is a creative labs speakers models sub problem**
if you have warranty I suggest you use, Creative is alert on this kind of pop up sounds and others, concerning the subwofers.
time to RMS, or fix on house or other person who can change some resistors on the SUB.
other than this, ...just change for CREATIVE 7800 speakers, are good, and they correct this issue on this ones, I got it and I have 3 years with them and no problems.
good luck

    hi again!
Yes, it could be resistor, it is getting hot or when voltage get changing because the fluctuation on energy, this little things sometimes damage this capacitor and IC, or resistors. you have to make them see with a near reaparing shop near you, this may cost a few 45.00 or less.

but well, if you need your sub! this is the price!

    here always! FIX YA!

Sound only coming from 3 of 6 speakers

A 5.1 sound card will give output in all channels only if the audio being played is also 5.1.

Normally out of 6 Speakers only 2 front and sub woofer will play sound, in case of a DVD or Movie which has 5.1 encoding, all 5 will come alive.

Also, Dolby Prologic II and Dolby Digital will convert a 2 channel input into psudo 5.1 enviornment but Dolby has to be in hardware or speakers or Receiver.

Megaworks 550d doesn't switch on

Step 1:

i had same problem with my magaworks 5.1 thx550.
i have tried to find solution in web but it was only one which voltage sense resistor 2Mohm track in PCboard was damaged.
after check PCboard in my megaworks thx 550 i found that tracks are quite well and voltage sense resistor is well too.

Step 2:

REPAIRING PROCEDUREin below items there are repairing procedures that i did with my THX550.to access to BCboards it is required to remove electronic boards from woofer case.
1- remove cover of woofer.2- remove woofer speaker from case by cutting and marking connected wires.
3- remove all Philips screws around cover and remove electronic parts smoothly, care about glues around power cord.4- remove and disconnect power supply board from other parts.

3_12_2013_7_45_42_am.jpg5- replaced switcher TOP234Y and capacitors C102, C206, C205 and D10 as below photos.3_12_2013_8_08_28_am.jpg6 check all of related tracks in repairing area.3_12_2013_8_10_00_am.jpg

3_12_2013_8_48_15_am.gif7- now it is time to re assemble electronic parts very carefully and prepare for test. it is better to use isolated transformer and put a lamp in serial to protect PCboard against short circuit. if green LED (POWER LED) is on it means that every thing is O.K.
8- in this step all of electronic parts should return back to case and reconnect sub woofer connections.3_12_2013_9_02_39_am.jpg

Step 3:

after replacing damaged parts my THX 550 is working well maybe for next 10 years.
i hope above mentioned instruction can be useful and helpful.

Ground hum loud

Groung hum is usually caused by another 60 cycle interfearance. The two case grounds are not sharing a common ground. Use a 2-prong adapter on the speaker power cord, thus isolating the ground to the speaker.

Sometimes you can take an extra audio cord and connect (a not used connector) from the bass speaker to the computer, just so it will have an additional ground.

I have creative 2.1 channel with sub woofer and 2 speakers (left&right) all of sudden my right speaker is not working left only working then I pluggeg right speaker to left speaker jack in sub...

I have a similar reoccuring problem with the left channel on my speakers. All of a sudden, while playing music or whatever, the left channel jusr dies. Turning the system off and then on again from the conrol unit does not remedy the situation. By chance, I discovered a workaround to get the left channel working again: Push the main power switch of the subwoofer until it almost switches off and then release it so that the power is never actually switched off. Now a click is heard in the system and the left channel comes alive again. This is quite annoying and seems to have something to do with switches in the subwoofer. Low quality components may have been used. I 've been thinking of getting another 2.1 system, but it's not easy to find one... Maybe I should open the subwoofer box and go through the switches and possibly hardwire some connections...

Megaworks THX 550 does not power up

I was able to repair my sytem using the guidelines from pouakai at (http://forums.creative.com/t5/Speaker-Systems/Successful-repair-of-MegaWorks-THX550-power-supply/m-p...

My system also would not turn on. The problem was on the power PCB - the one with the two large heat sinks attached. I found that the piece of PCB track joining the 2M ohm resistor (connected to the LINE-SENSE pin of the TOP243Y switcher) to the positive output of the full-wave bridge rectifier, was broken. This could have been caused by corrosion from the glue (which covered that section of track). I also replaced the 2M (0,5W) ohm resistor, just incase it was also to blame. The 2M ohm resistor is located under one of the two black heatsinks. I used a short piece of wire to replace the PCB track (from the large filter capacitor next to the resistor) to the 2M ohm resistor. Plugged everything back in, and it worked!

The circuit diagram given on page 21 of the TOP234Y's data sheet was very useful, and helped me understand how the circuit functioned.

I hope this is heplful for others who have this "no power" problem!

Cambridge megaworks 250D won't power up.

Yes, Hi there, as junk996 say, check for the FUSE , and carefully see if burn, or something is bad waired, other than this, if you can RMS the unit is better, or with warranty.
If not, check with s tech guru , for open the panel and check cables, or broken wires. (board inside the sub)
good luck!
