The camera only show black through the viewfinder window or the view screen. What could be causing this? I can view already captured pictures on the screen, but cannot capture a new picture by the screen or viewfinder.

Dec 8, 2015 - There is no picture or a black screen appears in the viewfinder or LCDwhen attempting to ... Look to see if an image can be seen in the viewfinder or LCD. IMPORTANT: Some camcorders have both a viewfinder and LCD.
Does your camera also have an optical viewfinder? If so, chances are that you accidentally pressed the button that turns the screen off to save battery power. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. For your model camera, read the user manual to find out where this button is. On Canon cameras, it's usually a little button labeled DISP or DISPLAY. Just press it oonce to turn the screen back on again.
But if the above doesn't help, have you tried downloading photos taken when the screen is black? Are these photos also black? If so, chances are in this case that you are experiencing a stuck shutter. This is also very easy to remedy (see this).
The s7000 has three different display modes: Screen, viewfinder, and off. Screen is for looking at the big screen, viewfinder is for looking through the digital viewfinder, and off should turn off all the displays. Try pressing the DISP button once. That should reactivate the screen and make it possible to use the camera again.
Turn the camera on. With the screen showing, press the DISP button and this will give you a selection of different screen views i.e. squares for aligning shot squarely; black - thru viewfinder only; etc. Different modes will give you different screen displays i.e. P setting screens are different to when you have the camera set on AUTO.
When camera is turned on the viewfinder is black. All other
functions appear to be working correctly. I can view pictures on the
card. I take a picture and it views on the screen and the spec's come up on the botton of the view finder but the viewfinder is 90 black with a bit of blur. Is this the censor or a mirror...?
Is this fixable and at what approximate cost? Would it be cheaper
First thing to try is that you didn't accidentally turn off the LCD screen. Turn on the camera, and press the bottom DISP on the back of your camera.
If that didn't work, the next thing to try is to take a picture while the viewfinder is black. Download the picture to your computer, and view it on the computer's monitor. Does this picture also show up as black. If so, then the camera's CCD imager has likely failed, requiring professional camera service to be repaired. If your camera was an S1 IS, Canon would fix this for free:
