Freezer way too cold - ice cream hard as a rock

Hi, I have a Kenmore Elite top-mount model 106.74213400. I have been having problems with the freezer running way too cold. It is set at it's warmest setting - 5 degrees. The refrigerator seems fine.

I have been trying to diagnose the problem for a while. About 6 weeks ago, I took off the back panel and the drain hose was frozen solid. Defrosted and cleared drain hose and thought all would be fine. But the ice cream was still hard as a rock. Last week, took off back panel and drain hose was not frozen, but the evaporator coil was frosted over. Defrosted again. Still, ice cream too hard.

Tonight I played around with the controls a little. I hear the fan running now when the freezer door is open and if I hold the door switch in when the frig door is open. But I don't recall having heard the fan running for quite some time.

I have airflow into the frigde, but not great. The evaporator coil is probably frosted up again.

I cannot find a defrost timer anywhere. Does this model have one?
Is it possible that the fan was not working for a while and is now working again because I played with the control panel and the door switches? I read somewhere that the door switch could be bad - anyone know anything about that?

Also, if you have suggestions - part numbers would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I have the same problem and from reading on the web I think I have found the problem. It is a bad Freezer Thermistor and they are very inexpensive. I am posting a link that can help you determine if this is the problem.

I found some service instructions for Kitchenaid side by side fridges with electronic control. Since both your fridge and KA's are made by Whirlpool, the instructions should apply. I learned something new, there are TWO thermistors! To download the instructions go to Service Matters Online click on technical reference, then next pge click on I accept, next page click on technical library [left sidebar], next page click on job aids [left sidebar], next page click on search job aids [upper middle of the page], next page type in refrigerator then click on search, next page click on KA side by side electronic control [KAR-10], next page click on the pdf symbol, then print out the document.

Freezer too cold. Ice cream freezes hard like a rock. Freezer does not respond to temp control which is turned to maximum warm.

Have you checked for an ice buildup on the evaporator coils. One cause could be that the thermostat is getting a false reading because of ice build up.

I have a kenmore upright freezer and can't remember which setting it should be on. It has coldest 1 2 3 etc.

I keep min two notches from the coldest setting.A great way to check where you should set yous,is ice cream.Put an open container of ice cream in the freezer, and turn the freezer to coldest. The next day try to scoop the ice cream. If the ice cream is hard the freezer is too cold.Adjust the freezer two notches ,and try the ice cream the next day.Repeat till you are happy with the hardness of the ice cream. It should be easy to scoop but not too soft.

Ice cream and Cool Whip are soft but ham/chicken are hard

Freezer is not cold enough probably holding about 20 degrees. Try setting your temperature up for the freezer if that doesn't help you may have a problem that needs service.

Freezer too cold--refrigerator too warm

If the cold control is not adjusting the temp when you move it, that can be part of the problem.
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";} The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

I have a kenmore coldspot refrigerator that no long makers ice. The water still works but nothing comes from the ice maker anymore. I am not sure if it is the water supply or the sensor. There is no water...

Hi: Try setting your freezer colder. It should be at 0 degrees F to make ice. the ice maker is thermally protected. Don't check to see if it made ice every 30 mins. it's human nature to check, but you will just dump the cold air out of the freezer and slow the production of the ice. Maybe this will help. Food will be frozen at 32 degrees, but not cold enough for the ice maker to cycle on. Ice cream should be rock hard. I hopes this helps, Jeff

Frige is cold, freezer is cold & freezing . . . Ice maker not making ICE.

Hi: As we don't (as in I) know the actual temp. in the freezer, this is a simple and free try. Cold is cold. The temp in the freezer has to be 0 degrees to make ice. They are thermally protected. A good guess for temp. is your ice cream. Is it rock hard? A lot of refrigerator thermometers are inaccurate. Just try setting your freezer colder. Ignore human nature and don't check the freezer every 30 Min's. You will never get to 0 degrees. I hope this helps, Jeff

Freezer way too cold - ice cream hard as a rock

The freezer may get as low as -18 degrees F or 0 F this is the point when life and bacteria stops growing.
Ice cream shouldn't be that cold unless it is whipped with air.
