Have you installed the GARMIN USB device drivers on your computer?

Without this, the computer won't know how to communicate with the GARMIN unit.

This is a link to the download page HERE
...or navigate to it from HERE

When installing the USB drivers, disconnect the GARMIN unit from your PC, then wait until the installer says to connect it.

How do I update data

Every brand of GPS devices, will offer updates for their sat nav's.
Some brands offer a "life time" free update, some only offer new maps when you pay. Not knowing what brand and or model I can't tell you how and where you can buy or get new maps for your device.

I need my free map update that came with my nuvi 205w

Hey steven barber,

To update the garmin nuvi 205 for free, you'll first need to have your GPS, an USB cable and a computer. There are web sites that will allow you to down load an update to your GPS for free. Make sure the version you pick is compatible to your computer to download it. You'll want to plug the USB cable into both the GPS and the computer, to download the upgrade to your GPS.

Check this link out for the Garmin myDashboard for your GPS

Good Luck!

How do i update my gps

A GPS will help find the shortest and fastest routes to a particular destination. When the maps are out of date, the GPS may not be able to find the best route. A GPS should be updated at least once per year. Some GPS manufacturers will allow the user to download free updated maps; however, many manufacturers require the user to purchase updated maps. Updating a GPS map isn't complicated, and will take about 2 hours to install.

1.Turn on the GPS and plug the USB cable into the USB slot located on the GPS.
2.Plug the other end of the USB cable into the USB slot on the computer.
3.Insert the map update DVD into the computer. If you have a map download, locate and open the file on the computer.
4.Click on Update Firmware located on the main menu. Click "OK" when the firmware is finished updating.
5.Unplug the USB from the computer and turn off the GPS. This will allow the firmware to reset on the GPS. Turn the GPS back on and select the language and time.
6.Reconnect the USB to the computer and click on "Update Map," then click on "Load Maps."
7.Connect to the Internet by clicking on the activation link. This will display the activation number. Find the serial number located on the back of the DVD. If you downloaded the update, a serial number was provided. Enter the serial number and activation code into the update program to continue updating.
8.Close the program after it has completed the update, and unplug the USB from the computer and the GPS. Turn off the GPS to finish the update.

I hope you find it very helpful. Thank you for using fixya.

My gsp only has a sd card no usb slot so how do i transfer the update to my gps Thanks

Depending on the type of GPS you have, you have a few options...

If the update instructs you to put the update files on the SD card, you need a means for your computer to access the SD card. This can be done by using an USB SD card reader, which can be picked up at your local electronics, digital photography store or online.

If you have another device that allows the transfer of data between a computer and the device (and it uses SD cards), you can put the SD card for you GPS into your other device, connect it to the computer through USB, and transfer the update files. For example, if your digital camera uses an SD card, you could put the GPS SD card into the camera, and then connect the camera to the computer.

Make sure you're updating correctly - sometimes the update is a file you run on your PC that in turn transfers files through a different means onto the GPS. Read the manual for your GPS for more information regarding transferring files onto the GPS and updating.

How do I update the maps on my garmin i3 streetpilot? is there a free download?

Garmin allows you one free update for your maps as long as you do it within 60 days of your day of purchase. You have to download it with your computer and then use the USB cable that should have come with your receiver to transfer the update to your GPS. After the initial free update the charge is $100.00 per year or $200.00 for lifetime updates.

NEED UPDATES

Yes, you can get SOME updates for free... indefinetely.

You will need the latest version of TomTom Home software, available for free from www.tomtom.com.

Install the software on your computer BEFORE connecting the TomTom GPC to the USB port of the computer.

The free updates you can get are:

1) "QuickFix" updates. This contains the global positions of GPS satellites, allowing the TomTom GPS to get a faster lock on the GPS satellites (the GPS will get a lock within 5-10 seconds of being turned on, instead of 2-5 minutes on some other GPS brands). It is suggested that you update the QuickFix at least once a week. If you don't do it often, the GPS will just take longer to find the GPS satellites, that's all.

2) Minor updates to your map(s), but only the ones submitted by other TomTom users.

3) Updates to POIs (Points of Interest), such as new stores, malls, gas stations, parking lots, etc.

Whole-map updates ARE NOT FREE

My computer wont detect my tom tom go

go to tomtom's website and manually download their software. Save it to your HD and run it.

The program should automaticly load the correct drivers and will prompt you when to connect the GPS.

TAKE NOTE of how long you are allowed to get free map updates and make sure you do update the maps before that time expires.

also with my GO720 I skipped an update so instead of the update costing $49 they now want double that because my maps are 2 revisions old.

My tomtom is 24% up to date. How do I update?

You need a Tom Tom USB Cradle that will allow you to connect your tom tom to a computer. Assuming you already have one, then just connect the Cradle to a working USB port on the computer, then with the computer turned on, plug your GPS into the cradle. It should come on automatically and ask you "Connect to Computer?" Just press Yes on the GPS screen and your GPS will attempt to talk with your computer. It will automatically download updates for your system software and any mapping corrections made by you of other users. If it does not automatically download updates, then you need to launch Tom Tom Home. Once this launches one of the first screens has a button titled "Update My GPS" Just touch this bitton, or click it with your mouse... and you will be away.
