Will not scan kodak easyshare 5100

It will copy/print but if i put in a pic and hit scan then start. the on/off light flashes then it quits 1 min ltr with no pic scaned

Similar scan problem as 5100 and 5300 models. Error Code 1 -2036 Scan could not be completed. This occured after I had been scanning, & then Vista crashed (BS of D) & when it restarted nothing but errors. Shut down unit restarted, no change, rebooted no change,

Interesting... I didn't put this "it will copy/print but if i put in a pic and hit scan then start. the
on/off light flashes then it quits 1 min ltr with no pic scaned" in my original post.

My Post starts with "Similar scan problem..."

  • jenic5476 Feb 10, 2008

turned printer on and it says paper jam

  • DIMrBobSir Feb 15, 2008

Swapped out with new cable. No change. Kodak support has been trying, althought sometimes seems they don't read what I sent. Last solution included donloading software to wipe the traces left on the box after unintalling.

Problem seems to be the AiO software. Found a memory chip and put in in the slot in the printer. I can now scan to that chip & the PC will read the chip, but you don't get all the fancy bells and whistles that the software provides.

Here is my scanner problem story with the solution.

I bought a 5100 All-in-one printer in Oct 07. Installed the software and was up and running perfect. In Dec07 the printer would not scan. The scanner light would just make a horrible noise and not move. I checked the forums and blogs which made me worry when I saw all the negitive stuff about Kodak support. I called the 800# and talked to someone at Kodak. I explained my problem and after some information was exchanged they said they would ship me another printer. I had to give them a credit card # to make sure I returned my damaged unit. 3 days later the printer arrived and I packed up my old one in the same box, stuck on the return label supplied and called FedEx for a pick up. Done deal.

Well, my new printer didnt work either. I called Kodak and downloaded some new firmware and the updated software. The printer/copy worked but no scanner. I would press the SCAN button then START with just the green light flashing. No noise atleast now. The Home AiO software wouldnt even open anymore. I couldnt give a **** about the Easyshare BS software which worked. I was frustrated at this point and gave up. It is now June 08 and I figured I would try again. I emailed Kodak again with my software problem and was given this course of action:

    1. Perform a clean re-installation of the KODAK AiO Home Center software:
    a. Disconnect all USB devices from the computer, including the Kodak EasyShare all-in-one printer.
NOTE: Do not disconnect your mouse or keyboard.
    b. Uninstall the Kodak EasyShare 5000 series all-in-one software:
    i. In the Control Panel, select Add or Remove Programs (Windows XP) or Program and Features (Windows Vista).
ii. Select one of the following software programs from the list of currently installed programs, depending on which one
    appears in your list:
    Kodak EasyShare software
    Kodak all-in-one printer software
Kodak EasyShare 5000 series all-in-one software
iii. Click Change or Remove (Windows XP) or Uninstall (Windows Vista).
iv. When the Install Wizard appears, click Next.
    v. Depending on the issue(s) you are experiencing, do the following:
If you are experiencing errors with the Kodak EasyShare software, such as a Tricode, in addition to errors with the KODAK AiO
Home Center software, select Remove, click Next, and follow the on-screen instructions for removing the software.
If you are not experiencing errors with Kodak EasyShare software, select Modify to uninstall only KODAK AiO Home Center
    software, and click Next.
vi In the Custom Setup window, select Remove from the drop-down menu for the Kodak All-in-One Printer, and click Next.
vii. In the Ready to remove the program window, click Next.
viii. In the Uninstall Complete window, click Continue.
    ix. Restart the computer.
    c. Delete the files and folders that can interfere with the installation.
    For Windows XP, delete:
    i. Printer folder in C:\Program Files\Kodak
ii. Both the Eastman Kodak Company and KDS_Kodak folders in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data
    iii. Kodak 5000 Series AiO folder in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Kodak
    iv. Printer folder in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Kodak\EasyShareSetup
    For Windows Vista, delete:
    i. Printer folder in C:\Program Files\Kodak
ii. Eastman Kodak Company folder in C:\ProgramData
iii. Eastman Kodak Company folder(s) in C:\Users\your name\AppData\Local
    d. Run Disk Cleanup.
    i. Open My Computer.
ii. Right-click Local Disk (C:) and select Properties.
iii. Click the Disk Cleanup button.
iv. When the Disk Cleanup for (C:) window appears, select the Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin, and Temporary Files
    check boxes.
    v. Click OK , then click Yes to delete all files and begin the Disk Cleanup.
vi. When the Disk Cleanup is finished, click OK in the Local Disk (C:) Properties window.
    e. Shut down all background applications.
    i. Select Start > Run.
ii. Type msconfig in the Open field, and click OK.
    iii. Select the Startup tab.
IMPORTANT: If not all the applications in the Startup Items list are selected, write down which applications are selected so
you know which ones to turn on again later.
iv. Click Disable All , then click OK .
    v. When prompted, restart the computer.
    f. After the computer restarts, insert the KODAK EASYSHARE 5000 Series All-in-One Software CD into the computer CD drive to
    begin the installation.
    g. During the installation process, when prompted, select to search for an updated version of the software on the Kodak Web
site and install the updated version.
    h. Before restarting the computer again, turn on the background applications.
    i. Select Start > Run.
ii. Type msconfig in the Open field and click OK.
    iii. Select the Startup tab.
    iv. Under Startup Items:
    - If only some items were originally selected, select the check box in front of the items that you noted in Step e-iii.
    - If all background items were originally selected, click Enable All, and click OK.
    i. Restart the computer.

So I did all this and nothing was fixed. I then started playing around installing and unistalling the software on my desktop with XP and my laptop with Vista.

Finally after clearing out both computers of Kodak stuff each time. The magic combo was this.

Desktop Windows XP: Installed the Home AiO software only with my old CD from when I first bought the printer. I went under custom install and only selected to install the Home AiO. NO card makers or easyshare.

This time the program opened !! But I had an error code that recommended I upgrade the software. So I went to Kodaks site and upgraded....

    Wha LA... Everything works.

Now its my Laptop Windows Vista turn: I did the same install of only the Home AiO with my old CD. The program finally opened !!! It did NOT ask me to upgrade and Im not going to since it works now..

I did have a good experience with Kodak. I am not that computer savy so I get confused quickly. I am an auto mechanic who has built cars from the ground up. Engine building to complete wiring, but Computer programs I just dont understand.

I hope this helps someone else. I am real happy with the printer, even more so that the scanner is back to working.

    Chris

When I use the 5500 from my Home Center I get the Error code 1-2036. It was working fine. I don't know what happend. I reinstalled with no change in the program.

Re installed all the software and upgraded to newest versions, even upgraded firmware on printer through kodak website. But have yet to be able to scan a single thing. One time, and only once it said the image was saved to my PC but it was just a black screen.... If I try to scan through the AIO software it says my scanner is busy... and never says anything else... any help would be nice. huskermanaz@hotmail you add the . com so bots dont spam my email. • charlesbouwe Jan 10, 2009

Printer works fine, copier fine. Scanner at some point quit. I get a window that say's

MSG_OPENDS failed with result 1 and condition 5. I also get the error code 1-2036.

Kodaks on line help chat was so useless I hung up and sent an email complaint and received worthless advice. Not one of their help options worked. I don't think the money saved on ink is worth all the headaches this printer has given me. This is not the first problem I've had with this piece of junk.

I want to scan pictures and when i mash the scan button all that happens is the on/off button starts flashing. I dont know what to do?

  • pgga Mar 10, 2009

If I try to use the Scan button from the Kodak Home Centre, I get error 1 - 2036 too.

Sice I was scanning a document for my files, as workaround, I used «insert» «image» «from scanner» in WORD and it worked.

I will hang on to my faithful old Epson scanner though.

O.K here's what I did. So my stupid kodak printer/scanner (just the scanner) wouldn't work on my quad core vista system (i guess the software wasn't tested and debuged for vista, lazy cheap kodak...) and their tech support is reading scripts and instructions written for XP not vista because the software is outdated, so ... uninstall the useless spyware-laden chunk of software kodak gave you with the printer ( leave the drivers, you need em' ) then if you go into start/programs/ windows photo gallery (a cool program included with vista), you can scan from this software by opening it, going under (file) then choose (import from scanner) the scanner setup screen comes up and it is barebones but way better then the coaster that kodak gave me with my aio printer and now I can scan again!!! with my scanner!!! stupid kodak.

The 1-2036 problem is a Kodak HomeCenter software error. You will find that you can scan with other aplications that can access the scanner's twain driver. Try the scanner and camera wizard if you use XP or use Paint if you have Vista. Kodak's software developers have not been able to resolve the problem over the past year so dont waste your time reloading and tweaking.

I had an old Dell AIO printer driver still installed on my computer. I removed that from Add/Remove programs, restarted. Then I ran the Kodak AIO software in "Repair" mode and restarted again. Everything is now working as should. I also sent this information to the Koday techs since I spent HOURS on the phone with them and they never mentioned checking on old printer drivers.....

DIMrBobSir,

This could be an issue from your USB cable or motherboard chipset. If you have a seperate USB hub you could connect between the PC and the Printer it might help. Or if you have another usb cable lying around try switching cables. There are known issues with some intel chipsets and high power devices and adding the USB hub between the PC and the printer could fix it. Also make sure you have the latest Firmware and software from Kodaks site.

This issue has been seen before. I will do my best to try and figure it out. Have you been able to get your hands on a USB hub to try that? Normally sending a print job to a printer is not a problem. But receiving input from the printer to the PC will show issues more often. It could be a firmware problem or software problem but there is still a chance that putting a USB hub between the printer and PC can clear up the communication between the 2. I will try and get any info about scanning from the 5100 unit as possible to help you out. Could you tell me you exact model of PC you are using? Company name, year you got it, model number, or if you could download a program called CPUZ and run it. and look under the Mainboard tab and tell me the north and southbridge chips your pc has. CPUZ is a common free program that just shows info about your PC. like memory speed CPU speed hardware models ect. just google it and download its safe and very informative and could help me find a solution to your problem.

    I will do my best!

I found this solution.. It might work but it was written for XP

    1. got to Control Panel/Printers&Faxes and delete the printer
    2. go to your Hardware/Device Manager/Universal Serial Bus Controllers, right-click on USB Composite Device and select Uninstall
    3. go to Control Panel/Add/Remove Software and remove the EasyShare software
    4. disconnect the cables from the Printer
    5. download from Kodak.com the program "install_aio.exe"; run the program
(I selected only AiO+EasyShare+Software Updater to load)
    6. followed the prompts after the sw installed to reconnect the Printer cables
    7. reboot

I think solution #2 not only reinstalls the program, but also installs microsoft .net framework 2.0. This was my problem when I had the error and could not scan (except from the panel on the scanner). I had .net framework 2.0 service pack one and uninstalled it, and then installed the other version, and got control of my scanner again. Yay! Kodak doesn't seem to want to take suggestions, though about it or, participate in the better business bureau to complain about them, so boo to you for not updating your printer drivers for .net compatibility.

I fixed my error code 1-2036 by going to the "Configure Settings" in the AiO Home Center then selected AiO Printer changed to "Print Quality" to Draft and clicked OK.... Then I was able to Scan with no errors. I think the config settings were corrupted some how and this resaved them properly.

Posted on Jul 04, 2009

OK, weird as it gets, Installed Picassa. Picassa invokes the Kodak software to scan using the 5500 without problems. Trying it from the Kodak desktop icon still gives the "Scan could not be completed" error.
Sent this info to the Kodak Techs, no info from them.

Lines through pictures and only color blue showing

This is an issue with the printhead of the printer. Please follow the below mentioned steps:
  1. Reseat the ink cartridges and the printhead of the printer. If you need help in doing so please go to the link http://faqs.kodak.com/atg/faq/attachments/AUR1780-2.pdf
  2. After you are through with reseating the ink and the printhead, the printer would ask you to go through a calibration and the light on the printer would begin to flash.
  3. To calibrate the printer, put paper in the paper tray and press Start button on the printer. After you have printed the calibration, you will have to scan it so place it on the scanner glass and hit the start button.
  4. After calibrating the printer, try a deep clean by pressing the Cancel and Copy buttons at the same time for two seconds. Wait for a minute and the cleaning process would complete.
  5. Try printing a Demo sheet by pressing Copy and Cancel button.

If you still have lines on the prints, you can get a free printhead replacement from Kodak.

While trying to copy a letter on a kodak 5100 easyshare the page prints out with a yellow strip about 2 inches wide down the entire right side length of the page . Why is it doing this?

Try this one, Turn on the printer, Take out the inks, remove the printhead, put back the printhead make sure it will snap and you hear a click, put the inks back, wait for the printer to initialize, Press the Menu button, look for Calibrate printer, then print calibration page, then scan it after. Load a regular paper. Then try to print a demo page by pressing Photo and Copy at the same for 5 seconds then let it go. If same problem persist call this no for further assistance 1800 421 6699

Problem with scanner

Hi,
Try to get the scanner operating by using a programme such as paint (open file from scanner or camera) or powerpoint (insert picture from scanner or camera). I have used this with success in the past. I have not used the scan button so I cannot advise you on this.
Hope this at least gets you going with scanning a copy of something and once you have it in these programmes you can at least print it and make some changes that you desire.
Hope this helps.
Youre right - they are a great printer!!
