Philips 55" rear projection screen

I have a Philips 55" rear projection screen (about 5 years old) and I seem to have a haze or cloudy picture. Any suggestions on what my problem may be and/or a solution.

The CRTs on Projection TV's run so hot that they put a reservoir of cooling fluid on them. Over time a bacteria tends to grow in it and cloud up your picture. Usually in the blue then green CRTs. It is kind of a job replacing the fluid, should be done by a pro as you have to remove the CRTs and then realign them afterwards. And if you spill the fluid on the circuitry, you really have problems.
Of course could just be a lot of dust inside the cabinet or on the lenses.
Hope Ya Fix It!

The colors look very weak. The green is weaker than the blue. Red seems ok. I have a philips 60 inch rear projection. It almost looks like a haze. The colors are not crisp. .

The TV has coolant in the CRTs that after years of use get cloudy. you will need to have a shop replace the coolant in all three, it is pretty involved so its best to have a trained tech. do it.

Blue haze on the lower part of rear Projection TV

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

I would first check and see if any software updates are out on this set, you can call Hitachi, if not that then it could be the engine assemble having problems.

I have a philips 60p8341 tv

Hi, the fluid in the tube has to be replaced, big & dirty job, set has to go to the shop to do this, be advised that this happens to all Philips rear projection tv`s eventually, problem is (besides being expensive to do) if the green fluid is getting cloudy the blue tube is not far behind. This can be confirmed by removing back bottom cover and looking directly into the lenses, you`ll see they are cloudy compared to the red one that almost never becomes cloudy, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, if you have more questions ask away, BMW Rider

Green dot in middile of my screen

The green dot in the center sounds like a burn mark on one or more of the picture tubes inside the set, and the curved lines are telling me that you have a problem in the convergence circuits. The blue haze around everything white tells me you either have a lot of dust build up on the lens over the CRTs, or your picture tube(s) are very weak. If this set is over about 12 years old, I would replace it. I doubt if you will be able to get the green dot out of the picture without changing the tubes which would be VERY expensive.
