Unfortunately, LG has this phone set up so that you are not able to change your message alert tone to anything apart from the default tones provided.

However, if and only if you are technologically literate [and not afraid of voiding any warranty still standing for your device, or afraid of bricking your device, and also agree to not hold me responsible for any actions you decide to take that may end with your device's failure] you may hack it.

This link will explain everything that you need to know to set your own alert tones, as well as several things.

However, again, I advise that, if you do decide to do so, you do so with caution.

You may check in to your phone the tone settings, and you may adjust the volume and even select the type of ringtones or alert tones.

If you have version 3 software there is no way that you can use mp3 or downloaded tones as message tones, best thing you can do is upgrade your firmware to version 4. Type this on the dial screen to check your version *#8375#
