Question about Sony FD Trinitron WEGA KV-36HS20 36" TV

1 Answer

PLEASE HELP QUICK! 36" Sony blinking 4 red times

My husband's precious TV has died! We moved a few months ago, since then occasionally TV would cut off and come back on in seconds (sometimes after hitting it). Two days ago I came in after being gone for a few days and it would not turn on at all. I could hear the "thung" sound like it was, a small flash of light at the bottom right of the screen but no picture at all. After a few seconds the smaller "thung" of the TV shutting off and then the red standby light is constantly flashing 4 times. We've already tried the hard reset and the whack/smack test (with vigor). Any other suggestions? I bought this used for about $300 over a year ago and I don't want to spend a ton to fix it. Should I scrap it or is it worth the repair? Thanks for any and all input/advice!

    By small malfunction, can I read that as fairly cheap to repair? Any ideas on how much probably? This thing weighs a ton and the idea of moving it again is scary! Thanks for the advice!

    The television is about 5 years old, one day we turned it on and it comes on briefly then is goes off automatically like a timed turn off. I tried to enter the menu but the tv never stays on longer than 15 seconds . This television is rarley used so it is in mint condition. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    This month (Dec 2008) our Sony FD Trinitron WEGA started behaving strangely. We noticed that after turning the set on with either the power button or the remote; it would immediately cut off. HOWEVER, if you pushed the power button again, the set would remain on.

    With Christmas fast approaching, we decided to overlook the annoyance for now; UNTIL this morning, 12/22/08:

    1. the set will act as though it is about to come on because the program sound is immediately audible;

    2. the set will remain on about 9 seconds the first time; then, it will immediately cut off;

    3. after it cuts off, immediately there is a red light will blink exactly 7 times; pause; and recycle the same 'blinking code' over and over again;

    4. each time you retry turning the set on, ironically, the set will remain on 3 or 4 seconds longer before shuting down again (EX. 2nd try resulted in 12 seconds of sound before cutting off again.);

    5. after it cuts off again, the red blinking light resumes its cycle
    In our opinion, it seems as though it could be locked to a sleep mode. However, the set doesn't stay on long enough to power up the picture so we can check.

    If this problem is easily resolved, we would appreciate some guidance. This set was purchased in 2002 and no longer under warranty.

    Thanks so much to anyone who will be willing to help us.

OCCASIONAL Metallic scraping noise - New ceramic brake pads.

You could be right with the wheel bearings. But first take the wheel off and check that nothing is scraping the rotor. Look all the way around the rotor. A suggestion will be that the brake pads have worn enough that the brake pad wear indicator is starting to scrape. Pry them back a little.

Put a voltmeter on battery. It should say something like 12 volts. Start motor and see if you have about 14.5 volts while running. If not your charging system has failed.

36" Sony Trinitron blinking red 4 times-PLEASE HELP QUICK!

Sounds like a typical high-voltage failure. Could easily cost another $300 to have it fixed. If it is less than about 6 years old I'd say it was worth fixing. If you want to DIY, then pull all the electronics out (label all the connections) and send it all to either Module Exchange at 972-298-1212 or PTS Electronics 800-844-7871
