Issue With File Titled "Normal.dotm" in Word 2007

I get the following message everytime I open Word: "Word cannot open the exisitng file (Normal)". I have tried everything to get rid of it and I can't! It also tries to save the file (Normal) when I close Word but gives me another error message saying it can't save the file as it is in use?

I have tried to delete the file (to be truthful, I can't even find the thing). I tried using the repair feature on the disk. Nothing seems to help.

Apparently the files full name is "Normal.dotm" but when I put a search on it, nothing comes up.

THe manual says that this file will create itself when you boot up Word but I again do not see it and when I try to close Word I get the same error issue.

How can I stop this from happening everytime I open Word? Please help!

Do NOT give your Product Key to anyone!!!

I appreciate the help with this but I don't understand the help that Aimiel attempted to give at the Microsoft site and the help that lan_man attempted to give didn't work! A rather odd thing happens when I try to follow: "C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Raoming\Microsoft\Templates" I get to "C:\Users\YourUserName" and there is no AppData. But when I put a search out for AppData I find it but can not trace it back. God this is frustrating. I can't for the life of me figure out why this started happening and can't seem to fix it. If there is anybody who has actually had the same problem as I have and you have a solution, I'd appreciate any help.

Thank you Aimiel for bearing with me. I changed the folder options as you indicated and I can now follow C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates, however the hotfix link you gave me really doesn't appear to describe my problem thus I did not contact Microsoft. I continue to have the same issue. It's like WORD is not seeing the file as it is in its proper place. Suggestions????

Hooray for Aimiel!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is the MAN. You solved my problem and hung in there when I couldn't get it fixed at first. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Sgoss53080,

Please note that you should NEVER give someone your software's Product Key! Balaji123's inquiry has been reported to the Webmaster.

The issue that you've encountered has no easy solution. Please read this Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

It looks like you're in Windows Vista, and dealing with 'pointers' that aren't shortcuts or folders, but merely pointers to same. This is a carryover from XP, and one of the reasons that I don't have Vista and never will. First, see if hidden files and folders are visible or not. Go to Control Panel, Folder Options and the Advanced tab. Make sure that the Show Hidden System Files and Folders is checked. You then need to see if THIS HOTFIX from Microsoft will fix it. After that, if you still have the same problem, please let us know.

    Have you tried lan_man's solution?

"Open Word and set the options you would i.e. font and size, then click on the office button and select Save As...Word Template. You will be warned that you cannot save as normal.dotm, so name the file normalold.dotm. After saving go to C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates and rename the file to normal.dotm and the problem is resolved."

I'd check and make sure that you delete the old normal.dotm file before attempting to rename the new 'normal' document. Please, if his solution works for you, select his solution and give him the 'FixYa' rating.

    Hope it will FixYa. Thanks.

This may be a repeat from what you've already tried, but the standard fix for this issue is below.

Click on Start > Run. Type %appdata% and click OK

Go to Microsoft > Templates folder and delete Normal.dotm.
Restart Word

Word 2007 saves and closes normal.dotm everytime I close it. It doesn't ask for anything, but it shows as an opened document in Word and start menus list.

It could mean that the normal.dot file is corrupt.

Try this:

1. Do a search for normal.dot
2. when found, change the name to "normal.dot.old"
3. restart your machine

Good Luck !!!!!!

"this modification is not allowed because the document is locked"

Rename all instances your document template files (Normal.dotm or Normal.dot) to prevent formatting changes, AutoText entries, and macros that are stored in the global template (Normalm.dot or Normal.dot) from affecting the behavior of Word and documents that are opened, rename your global template (Normal.dotm or Normal.dot). Renaming the template lets you quickly determine whether the global template is causing the issue.

When you rename the Normal.dotm template in Word 2007 or the Normal.dot template in Word 2003 and in earlier versions of Word, you reset several options to the default settings. These include custom styles, custom toolbars, macros, and AutoText entries.

Word 2007 Has Stopped Working

I'm not sure who provided your original solution, but I do know that if Word doesn't find normal.dot upon starting, it will recreate it. A lot of weird problems in Word are due to a corrupt normal.dot file. (It's called normal.dotm in 2007.)

Here is a Microsoft KB article regarding the global template in Word, with some troubleshooting hints. Please let me know how it goes!

Normal.dotm Won't Adopt Macros & Code is Seen as Full of Bugs

It sounds like your Anti-Virus or Spyware is blocking and won' t allow access, it thinks its harmful, try turning off the Virus software installed, do your thing and then turn the software back on. If thats not it then your Software is damaged and you will have to install a new copy of Office. Good Luck.
