If the unit completely turns off than there is an issue with it, if the screen dims but the unit is still running it may be in your display settings that you have it to automatically dim backlight to save power.

your GPS unit powers down before it can fully boot up, the battery will
need to be charged. Please charge the unit with the vehicle power
cable or on a computer for at least three hours. After charging the unit,
it should power on and function normally. If the unit will not charge in
the vehicle, check the fuse in the power cable for the unit and
the power outlet in the vehicle.
If the battery is bad it must be sent in replacement.
Accordingto Garmin, this problem can be fixed by disabling the WAAS feature in teh set up menu. There is an incompatibility between the old Garmin software and latest WAAS upgrades. Later software from Garmin is supposed to fix this problem.
Plug the charger into the mini-usb jack. The unit should turn on and when you come to the main menu, you should see a lightning bolt over the battery bar graph. This indicates that it is charging. If you don't plan on using it and want to charge it over night, if your Nuvi has a push down power switch on the top, press and hold it briefly until it goes to a black screen and says charging. If your Nuvi has a slide switch, slide it to the left until you get the same charging screen. A few seconds later, the screen will go dark but if you touch the screen, it will light up again and say its charging and go dark again. After several hours, when you go to touch the screen it will say Charging Complete". Yiu will also notice then when you go to use it, you will see ALL of the green bars on the battery bar graph will be lit. No, you can not overcharge it.
I contacted Garmin and they actually researched the problem and got back to me with a solution a few hours later. I have already instituted it and it works. Here's what they suggested:
Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I will be more than happy to help you with this. The situation you described appears to come from a change in the WAAS system by the government. To correct this issue you must turn the WAAS off. To do this turn the unit on and press the menu button twice. Next highlight setup and press enter. Under the system tab, WAAS is located in lower right hand corner. Scroll down and over to highlight enabled, press enter and change to disabled. Engineering has been informed however due to the discontinued status of this unit we are not sure when ( or if ) a new unit software will be issued to correct this problem. I appologize for any inconvienience.
I have run into the same problem and it may be related to the WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) feature. Try disabling this feature (under MAIN MENU / Setup). I used this receiver overseas (Asia and Europe) last year for 35 days straight with no problems. During this time WAAS was disabled as none of these satellites are visible overseas. The problem occurred intermittently prior to the overseas trip, and has reoccurred after returning. I was running into the same problem this past weekend and noticed the screen blanking out (with the vertical line) shortly after differential corrections were applied to the GPS signals. I disabled the WAAS and let the receiver run for over an hour. The problem did not return. Hope this helps.
