Question about Lexmark Wheelwriter 1000 Typewriter

2 Answers

Carriage return Everything works on my Lexmark 1000 except when I hit the return, it returns half way, makes a noise and won't backspace anymore. The only solution is turning it off and then back on ~ it doesn't do it everytime, but more often than not. What could be the problem? Is it something I could fix?

I'm having a similar problem. The typewriter will return to the original position (on the left), but after you've typed to a certain point (about 3/4 of the way over), when you hit return, it will only go as far as that 3/4 of the way point every time you return. The only way to make it go all the way back is by turning it off and on.

I had the same problem and tried cleaning it out and it still didn't work. I took the batteries out (there were old and corroded) and now it works. Yay!

Try a slightly oily cloth and wipe the bar that the carrier moves on several times then with the machine turned off try to move the carrier both left and right to each end it should have some resistance but not be hanging up, you may have to do this several times. Good luck

Lube the round chrome rod that goes throught the carrier, Carier is what hold the ribbons and daisy wheel.
Lube pulleys on the belt. You may need to lube the carriage return motor too.

IBM Wheelwriter 1000 wont Return everytime

Probably no cracking required. Spray a little WD40 on the silver shaft that the carrier slides on, if that dosen't do it there is the carrier motor in the left rear that the bearings dry up in a little WD40 will work there as well.

Carriage return not working

Turn off T/W and see if the carrier will move back and forth freely, if so try removing the batteries and unplugging the machine this will reset to defalt settings. CAUTION THIS WILL ALSO CLEAR YOUR MEMORY!! If the carrier is hard to move a little light oil on the shaft it slides on may cure the problem.
