Question about Mustek A3 USB Flatbed Scanner
Mustek A3 USB 1200 Pro flatbed scanner problem. Loaded drivers from disc, rebooted, attached scanner and it says scanner busy or not connected. Scanner appears in control panel under scanners and cameras. Scan software comes up but not a peep from the scanner. Says it's not connected. Using Windows XP service pack 2. Just purchased this week. Please help.
I bought one a couple of years ago. After plenty of hit-miss after trying to get it to work on my fresh XP installations, I have a solution. Installing it the normal way simply doesn't work.
First, go to 'start', 'control panel' then 'system'. Click the 'hardware tab' then press 'device manager'. You'll see a list of hardware.
If your scanner is already plugged in, find it (it could be listed under 'imaging' or under 'other devices'. You should see a yellow exclamation point indicating it's there but not working.
If you go to 'control panel... system' first, and then plug in your scanner, it will pop up automatically.
Now, right click on it, select 'update driver'. A window pops up. Insert the CD, then select 'have disk' and install normally.
Installing the remaining software is optional (acrobat 4.05 and so on)
I've used the "Panel" to scan my pics. Working like a charm.

I can tell you of a similar problem/situation with an HP scanner,.
Having tried every method/procedure/trick...nothing worked! Since I've been doing this type of troubleshooting for the past 10+ years, I knew the scanner was operational...but, NOT getting the right commands to work!. With reading & re-reading
HP's site I reviewed some of their FAQ's and forums. Then I found information (still on HP site) regarding issues- unresolved problems-workarounds. I also found that the software (drivers) cd ,DRIVERS! are "incompatable" with Windows Imaging software which is loaded automatically with windows! You have to delete the windows drivers AND imaging program and edit your registry
then reload HP's drivers(pain in the #%$) wasn't worth all the
trouble. Picked up a $9.00 Epson scanner @ Goodwill that is
so easy-fast-sharp,... drivers load without problems. Donated the
Scan RAT and deducted for taxes! Chances are GOOD that the
Mustek software is doing the same. Delete the Mustek software
and see if Windows doesn't recognise and load it's own drivers!

I just installed one of these scanners for a client. The supplied Panel software reports the scanner ready even when not powered up so doesn't inspire confidence. I got it working by running a utility from the Start, Programs entry that announces it's presence on the local network. Can't remember the exact name and I am no longer on client's site, but subsequently could see 2 Twain drivers in Photoshop Elements (Import...) - one directly connected the other the networked version. I chose the networked version even though on the directly connected computer and scanned fine. Then found I could see the hardware as a device under My Computer within Windows Explorer. Right-clcik on it and you can set some property for the preferred software to use this device. After this all you need is connect and power up the scanner, double click on the device in WE and that loads your acquisition software with the TWAIN dialog for preview etc. Maybe the approach from the hardware side is the way to go. Good luck.
