Fn key

You could map that FN key to another unused key in Windows such as use the "[" or "]" key mapped as FN. Requires DOTNET Framework 2.0 to operate.

if no joy try it in safe mode

restart you computer tap the f8 key repeatedly to enter safe mode where the only things working will be your keyboard and mouse allowing you an attempt to repair your computer

If done properly the user should get to a screen similar to the below screen.

Select the option for Safe mode command prompt only

Windows Advanced Options Menu
Please select an option:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
Debugging Mode

Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.
select safe mode
restart your computer press and hold the delete or f2 key to enter BIOS using the arrow keys load failsafe defaults or load optimized defaults press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart

or

hope this helps

I cannot get to Windows XP even tried F8 function and F2 as well as F12. All it does is load Dell and then the screen goes blank

Hello sewelika, hi, your laptop has main board problems, this are the things that should be checked, sorry there are no quick fix on this.
  • check battery/CMOS battery as well, this may cause the laptop have wrong idea of what hardware are connected.
  • check for memory which causes your laptop not to boot.
  • check for Hard drive this causes window not to load, and
  • Mainboard this causes all the above not to work properly.

My hp laptop 22mths old wont keep time. very time i switch it off it wakes with time it was switched off at? is it the cmos battery? no warranty.

Hi

Thank you for your query

From your description, indeed it does sound like the CMOS battery, however the vest way to check is next time you start the Laptop do the following

1)When loading the laptop there will be a message that says hit F12 or hit the del key etc etc to get into bios, press the appropriate key, if there is no such messgae try the keys F12, del or esc

once in Bios check the time if it is incorrect then it is the CMOS battery, if it isnt then it is windows related

However from what you are describing it does seem to be the CMOS battery

If this has been useful please leave positive feedback/vote/testimonial as this will help me greatly - Thank You again

Time/date never stay set.f1 f2 f3 always there on start up

This sounds like the cmos battery is low.
This battery sits on your motherboard and provides the ROM with energy. Replace this small battery, set date and time a final time and then it won´t happen again.

Laptop ntldr problem

When pc first starts, press the F2 key to open the pc cmos settings. Look around and find the boot list and ensure that the machine will boot on cd before hdd. Than boot on your OS cd and attempt to repair existing. This will at worse case reinstall your system.

How to reset power-on password.

The only way is to clear the cmos settings. However, there is a special way to do it. First you have to take out the battery and the power adaptor from the laptop. Then you need to open the laptop and look on the main board for the cmos battery. Take it out for a few minutes, maybe 5 - 10 minutes. Then plug in the power adaptor without the cmos battery nor the laptop battery and boot the computer. It will ask you to hit F1 to either load default values or to save settings. Do that. Then shut down the computer. Make sure settings is saved though. Put in back the cmos battery and the laptop battery. When you reboot, it should boot up with no password.
