Question about Compaq Armada 1700 Notebook

1 Answer

Compaq armada 1700 only starts on safe mode

It only starts on safe mode. It tells me that it has insufficient memory to start windows. I don't know what to do. All it memory is available. I check the mem and is empty. I do not know hot to go to the exact file like autoexec file or the config files to stop useless programs from running at startup. But when i type msconfig. nothing happens like it does when i do it on my pc with windows xp. thanks

It is an compaq armada 1700 it is running on windows 95 and it has 96 mb ram. I havent updated it actually i got it as a gift and was planning to get it working properly and give it to my kids to play. It was working fine a couple of weeks ago before my friend gave it to me and then he deleted some personal info from it and somehow someway no it doesnt start windows properly it only starts on safe mode. When i try to start it normally it gives me a message saying "insufficient memory to initialize windows.

Quit one or more memory resident programs or remove unnecessary utilities from your config.sys and autoexe.bat files, and restart your computer."

Not sure how to do that since when i go to start or run and type msconfig which is what i do with windows xp it doesnt work.

    thanks

If this is your notebook - Compaq Armada 1700 (316320-056) PC Notebook. The system memory only came with 32MB's of memory. Your not telling me enough. Have you recently upgraded your operating system? If I have this wrong please post which Compaq you have from the list I'm providing from this link:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/ProductList.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=96221&taskId=135
If you are trying to run a XP version your memory will need to be increased to at least 512MB. You still have the Compaq's splash screen loading when you turn on your notebook which blocks you from seeing the amount of memory installed in your notebook. So when you start your notebook press the F12 key on your keyboard. You need to enter the bios. If F12 does not get you there than try F10 or F1 key. At startup. Repeat hitting the key every two seconds till the Bios screen loads. Look for the amount of memory installed. At the bottom of the bios screen is instructions on how to navagate while in the bios. You'll need to post back with what you found If I'm to help further.

Here is the direct link to you Compaq. This is for a notebook that was installed with Win 95. Just as you say.

    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/Tec...

You mentioned the notebook has 96Mb of memory, than 32Mb is being used by the internal video card. This notebook has plenty to run Win 95/98. So some where down the road your friend made a boo-boo & messed up the windows files. The best way to repair it would be to load the win 95 CD into the cdrom & reinstall it right over it's self. Armed with the link above you can re-install all the notebooks needed driver files. It wouldn't hurt to ask your friend for the CD or CD's that came with the notebook.

If you can't retrieve Win 95, than maybe you can get win 98.

Your notebook also supports 98 & other OS's listed here:

    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/Tec...

Even though you intend to let the children play with it you will never know what your going to run into. It is better for you to do a fresh install including a format. Than you know without a doupt the system will run as intended. With luck many more years! A little note, your notebook will run win XP. It will run a bit slow. The biggest problem is Compaq has no drivers for XP & this model. I wish you only the best!

I cant login to my Compaq Armada 1700 because i forgot the login and password please help

Which Password? Bios Password? Hard Drive Password? Windows Welcome Screen User Login Password?

Which Operating System?

OK, if you are running Windows 7, Microsoft tightenedsecurity on it so you've got to have a password reset disk which 99% of thepeople who own laptops with windows 7 fail to do. It should be one of thefirst things you do when you buy the laptop. Otherwise, you're faced withreinstalling the Operating System or possibly doing a System Recovery.

If you're on Windows XP or Vista try this:

Turn off the computer, then hit the power button to turn it back on andimmediately start hitting the F8 key repeatedly until you see the Safe Modeoption. Select SAFE MODE and let the computer boot up. When it getsto the User Login screen it will show the Administrator userid and the useridfor which you forgot the password. Sign in as the Administrator (hopefullyyou didn't put a password on it and forgot it too). Once the desktopappears it will look different, the screen will be darker and the icons bigger, but this is normal for safe mode.

Click Start/Control Panel/User Accounts
When the User Accounts screen opens, click on the userid for which you forgotthe password. Select the option to REMOVE PASSWORD.

Reboot your machine.

Memory overload

Greetings mh5591,

What this means is there currently is not enough hard drive on the unit to boot up windows. If there's not enough free space on your hard drive, Windows won't open. Try accessing through Safe Mode and see if you can create the necessary room. Boot the system, start tapping F8, when the menu appears, select
Safe Mode and press enter.

I hope this helps.

Forget the diagnostics. If things are that bad then do a complete format and reinstall. Trying to fix problems on any windows platform usually leaves you with more problems to solve. Bite the bullet and give you and your laptop a new lease on life. BMW
