Question about Coby DVD & Blu-Ray Players
I reside in the Philippines. I bought the Coby TF-DVD7333 Portable DVD player last October 28, 2007 at a shop in Greenhills Viramall Shopping Complex. I have been using it with no problems for months after I purchased it. However, a few days ago (February 4, 2008), I watched a DVD movie on my Coby Portable DVD player while I was lying on my bed (my bed is a low mattress only). The player was positioned on the floor beside my bed on the right side. The player was connected to the AC power (charging) while I watched the movie. I started around 4 pm. I dozed off while watching. Then, at around 9 PM, my coby DVD player exploded. It was a good thing that I was turned away from the player at the time it exploded. I must have turned during sleep. As I mentioned earlier, I have been using it with no problems for months after I purchased it. Most of the time it was connected to AC power overnight without problems until a few days ago when it exploded. There were two explosions. I assume the first explosion was due to the battery. The second one was the unit itself because I forgot to remove it immediately from AC power (I was dazed and shocked at the time being roused from sleep by the strong wave of the explosion). I immediately unplugged it, opened the window of my room to release the fumes coming from the unit.
The debris from the exposion of the Coby portable DVD player caused minor burns mostly on the right side of my body (face, neck, finger, chest, foot). My bedsheet was burning when I awoke but it was localized to one area only. I immediately diffused the flame with my hand, feet and pillow. Good thing the fire didn't spread immediately and our fuse box was not affected. Due to my panicked state, I placed what was left of the Coby unit in the trash and threw it out of our house for fear that there may still be corrosive chemicals left which may still cause a fire. Now, I don't have evidence that my unit exploded, only photos I took of it after the incident and my minor burns. When I checked my receipt, it was still within warranty. I just can't believe that the unit can explode that strongly. I hope the other people who purchased a Coby unit won't experience the same fate I did.
