How to open Hitachi LS-1000-EMEA 1TB external drive ? Want to open the case but do not see any screws, maybe it is a "one-way-only" assembly, something like "click-in" and thus cannot be opened again ?

Get a couple of guitar picks. With the unit upside down, you will see a curved ridge above the power and USB sockets, use your thumb to apply pressure upwards to this ridge. This will allow you to push a guitar pick between the dull plastic lid and the shiny plastic case, this is so the lid can slide clear of the case. Next go to the front of the unit and wrestle the other pick into the curved leading edge between the lid and the case. When it's in, you should find the lid will rise up a couple of millimeters. Now PUSH the pick towards the back of the unit. For me, the lid flew off undamaged and I could now access the circuit board and drive.

its true, there is no screws on it. It was clipped together.

You need a flat screw driver and use a little force to get it open from the side of the case.

But if you open, it might not close properly again. In such case, you can to use something to bind the case together.

I wish you all the best.

Sorry to say the above information was not correct and any use of force may damage your disk drive.
The case is very easily opened:
    1) Invert the case with the base upwards.
    2) Place the unit on a table top
    3) Place your hand over the thin plastic base cover with the laben and connectors towards you.
    4) While pressing downwards slightly, slide the cover ( just the cover) towards you for about 5mm ( that's very little, just over 0,25 of inch)
    5) Voila, no tools, nothing deformed.

If you require more help, ( hopefully your disk drive has not suffered a hard disk crash), then we provide advice without charge. We are a data recovery company with 26 years experience. Glad to be of help .)

Ok, I have a Hitachi LS-1000-EMEA 1TB external. And I tried Jana's (Disk_Crash), method of trying to gently open this thing, and I've still had no luck. It's a replacement drive from Hitachi, due to my old one kicking it in just under 7 months. And I probably could just send it back this one too (getting stuck with shipping costs again but whatever), but I already stupidly put data on there that I now need. Do you have any suggestions? THANKS, Greg

First of all you have to prise a small tab at the front of the base, above the cable / power sockets. I used a small knife but whatever you have.

Inside there is a little USB & power board that plugs into your SATA drive. In my case this seems to be faulty as it has suddenly started asking me to plug it into a faster USB2 port, although all my ports are already USB2. And it was quite happy running fast on that port last week. Suddenly my transfers speeds have gone from minutes to HOURS.
Any ideas how to fix it?
Or an email at Hitachi that they reply to?
(I tried support on their website - nothing).

Didn't work for me - there are 4 tabs about 2 cm and 7 cm from the end o the base which engage with lugs in the case, but they seem to have been glued or welded so I had to use a sharp thin knife to cut them.

I need a new circuit board for 1.0TB Hitachi external hard drive. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement

The cheapest way will be to buy the same drive again. Spare parts are very scarce and for that reason very expensive. When you want yo save the data on your drive, and you think the board is defect, think this will be the cheapest option.

The leads can be replaced or you can remove the drive from its casing and fit it in a new casing... or directly connect it to your computer.
There are youtube clips that will help you with this.

My Hitachi LS-1000-EMEA-SE is powered. I have 12V DC and correct polarity. It does not communicate with my PC

this is a USB external drive.
it must have 12v power pack, at full amperage, using the wrong power pack , will cause the drive to fail to start up, they need 2 amps to start.
next you listen to drive , is it spinning? (ear to case)
yes, good, no, then its dead. end of story. (wires fell off inside?)
next , when you plug it in, (windows. OS? what version, windoz 98? or w8)
windows goes Ding dong, telling you the USB device was just pugged in. did it? if not try another USB port. , you said PC
what PC? name it.? laptop.,netbook, desktop, what>?
if USB cant find it, then the drive is not reporting in,
if USB sees it, then use disk manager, does it see the drive>?

Some PC"s the USB ports can be off, turn them on. in the BIOS.

Hitachi LS-1000-emea 1.0TB usb pushed into drive

Sometimes if you tip it upside down and shake it in the general direction, it could slide back down.

If not, you will have to take off most of the screws, remove all the parts and find out why it happened in the first place. (It shouldn't happen)

I dropped Hitachi external drive...

If you have no backup and your drive is damaged, that is it, no data.
Plug the usb in with your drive, leave your computer looking for the drive. If windows, it may take some time. If Mac it won't be long. If neither can see it, the TOC is damaged and it will need a computer engineer to try and recover the drive.

Dropped Hitachi HD

WOW! Really painful!

CREATE a "backup" folder on your GOOD drive first.

Try this... YOU are trying to get your Hitachi drive to boot and READ! So PLACE your Hitachi Drive in GIVEN position and RETRY booting each time...

VERTICAL (connectors UP).. then connectors down. Will it boot and ACCESS? Try PC board UP, etc, etc... EVERY position you can think of... REBOOTING each time you re-position...

Hopefully ONE of those positions WILL allow you to ACCESS your Hitachi!! As soon as you can, SAVING your most important things first.

Take a look at the photo below... See the chrome 'arm' above the stacked disk(s)? You want to BANG the disk into your palm and hopefully 'free' that "arm" to access your drive again freely! Amigo ~ THIS IS a last resort...

But finally ~ it is written on the Pyramid Walls... BACK IT UP!

My hitachi Ls 1000 emea 1 tb is broken. The usb port has comepletely detached and gone inside the actual hardrive. How do i fix it? Can i buy a new usb thing? Can i open the harddrive?

If you get no joy using the Troubleshooting Guide then try this...
You will need to check You Tube to find a Dismantle on your product and follow the step guide on here, the procedure should be similar.
Check 1st that your External HDD has an P.C. internal HDD inside, from You Tube, before dismantle of your External HDD. Connections for an Internal Laptop HDD may have same connections as P.C. not sure though.
Once your happy that it has continue reading and follow the step guide on the link below.
My neighbour has the Seagate FreeAgent Desk 500GB, and in under 2 weeks it started to beep and was not reconized by any Laptop or P.C. if this is the same for you with any FreeAgent Desk series ( not GO series, different procedure for GO products). You maybe in luck click this link, you may have to register in the forums to view thread.... Thread can be found in 'Technical' under 'General Technical Issues'
