Question about SanDisk Sansa E280 MP3 Player

3 Answers

Key Locked Ok, I tried to turn on my Sansa e280 8GB mp3 player the other day and it came up with the screen "Key Locked" and following that it said "System Shutdown". I posted another problem like this and somebody told me to put it into recovery mode, which i did. In recovery mode it says "Welcome to Recovery Mode" then "Please connect USB Cable". So i plug it in and it says "Enter USB2.0 MSD mode" and a folder named 16MB-FORMAT (E:) popped up. Inside it has a Text Document named VERSION. What do I do now to get my Sansa to stop saying Key Locked System Shutdown.

Tried Recovery Mode and Updater. Still no luck. BTW, you get to Recovery Mode by pressing the left button 'Rec'.

Sounds to me like your hold switch is on. Have you tried sliding your hold switch on top of the player, next to the headphones jack to the off position?

IF THE KEYS ARE LOCKED THERES A BUTTON ON THE TOP THAT HAS A PADLOCK ON IT! SLIDE THE BUTTON OVER AND IT WILL WORK >> IT DOES THIS SO IF YOU HAVE IT IN YOUR POCKET AND YOU LOCK THE SONG WONT CHANGE!

You need to install the firmware and then plug your device..it will automatically aupdate the firmware..

  • Jean Sintulaire Feb 08, 2008

Aslo please check to see if the hold switch is not activate..The Sansa e280 Hold Switch is located on the side of the device, and is used to prevent any accidental
operation. Once the Hold Switch is moved to the lock position, all function keys will be disabled.
Buttons on the Sansa E280 will not operate when the Hold Switch is active.

Now that you update the firmware it wont ask you to do it again it will notice that you have the msot recent firmware available and yes you did it right...

    Hope that helps..

    Thank You

On the top of the player you should see a switch. Push the switch over until you can't see the orange side.

Key locked system shut down

On the top of the player there is a slider. When it is showing orange next to it your player is "Locked" so accidental button pushing wont mess up your tunes. Slide it over so it shows only white instead of orange and your player should be just fine.

You have locked the keys, look for a switch with a red , white or orange lock icon and move it then try to turn it on. The switch should be on the side of the player, either at the top, bottom or sides of the screen.
