Dell Inspiron 6400 BSOD Laptop Problem

Sorry, I know i screwed up, and I deserve to have a BSOD!! I had an error message on start-up, and no matter how many times I clicked cancel the message still appeared. I deleted it from the add/remove programs, but to no effect. So, this was driving me crazy and I googled someone for an answer. I was advised to go into my system files and rename one file in the dynamic link library. Which I did, only I forgot one vital letter, and when I did a re-start, I got a fatal system error message and the blue screen of death. I have tried everything to resolve, from F12 and runnning all the Dell Diagnostics, which bizarrely do not show any problem. I can't get it to run in safe mode - it takes me to 'last known good configuration' but when I select that nothing happens. And, to put the cherry on the cake, Dell never gave me a backup/recovery disk with my laptop so I really don't know how to fix my problem. My work colleage tells me Dell PC's and notebooks can easily be restored to the factory settings by doing a shift/ALT/CTRL F11 but I'm not keen on doing anymore damage! Your help would be most appreciated.

Hi,
not to worry about the problem you are facing.
if you really want to restore your system back to factory settings...want to give a fresh start try a ctrl+f11 on the dell logo..it will help..but then all your data goes with it...
secondly if you have recieved the windows cd..you can try doing the following things...
press f12 on dell logo...select the option that says ide cd rom...put you windows cd in the cd drive...press enter on your screen.. as your system would restart it would say something like.."press any key to boot from cd"..press enter on that...you reach the windows setup screens..once you reach the welcome to setup screen..press enter...press F8 on the licence agreement screen...the next screen would give you the following options
1.to conyinue installing windows press esc
2. to repair press r
3. to quit press F3

you need to press r
the process would take around 15-20 mins
after taht your system would restart..
i hope after that you would not get the BSOD.

if you dont have the win xp cd you can always call up dell and request for one..it would be dispatched to you.

If you can get an copy of a WinXP cd, you boot up to it and use the recovery console to replace the file you need. On the other hand, you can reinstall windows as well.

Well...nice situation you got there..listen the best thing you can do is to reinstall the operating sistem.is easy and quick.dont get your heands in the laptop..these are delicate things,so..no panic, youll get all done in maximum 2 hours.
so go into bios, check if there all ok,boot from cd and reinstall windows..if you loose data, well you can always recover it .look fror a recovery program..there are lots on the internet and are free.
look for one if need in www.softpedia.com
good luck my friend..bye

PPS and by the way..I suggest you not to repair the windows but to reinstall it.some ddl files can never be fully recovered and some other dll registry entryes may remain resident on the sistem.
    bye

Dell won't boot up. The following problems isolated by F12: 3600:0123 Battery test failed 0F00:075D IDE device failed: the self test failed to read ... 0F00:0244 Block 1905 74359: uncorrectable data error...

sounds like a complete motherboard failure with a lot of other problems.
if you remove the HDD ( turn the machine over. 2 screws on the right.slide drive out ) and mount it in an external caddy you should be able to use another machine to access the drive and probably get most data off it.
