I have borrowed my sister's Braun Freestyle SI 6595 steam iron and after filling with water and switching on at wall plug, nothing happened at first. Now there's a red light flashing on and off. What does this mean? The iron is still cold, so I don't understand what's happening.
Blinking red light is a standby phase, its not going to get hot like this. Shake it or just start ironing, the red light will go solid and the plate will heat up. The red light will go off when the plate is hot enough. It will go on again (solid) after a few minutes to keep the plate at the right temperature. If you leave it standing around for a while it will begin blinking again (standby).
These irons are known for malfunctioning though, mine stays in standby and the plate never heats up! Hopefully yours is fine.

1 Fill the iron's steam receptacle with white vinegar or CLR, a product used to clean coffee pots. CLR is available in department stores.
2 Plug in and set the iron to its steam setting.
3 Operate as usual. When the vinegar or CLR begins to steam, operate the iron as you would normally. Press it over an old, clean towel as the vinegar or CLR loosens sediment and dirt from the appliance.
4 Continue ironing until all of the cleaning solution has steamed out. Repeat the cleaning process if necessary until the iron no longer oozes discolored liquid and the ironing surface is clean.
5 Fill the iron steamer receptacle with distilled water and set the appliance to steam.
6 Continue steaming until the smell of vinegar or CLR is gone.

Your steam iron has been filled with 'tap' water that may have been contaminated (thus the smell).
Rust develops more rapidely in Steam Iron chambers when distilled water is not used: to clean the 'enclosure' of the steam iron from rust and smell, over a sink or outdoor, fill 'cold iron' with a 50/50 water/vinegar and a teaspoon of bicarb, let it stand for about 10 mins, then turn the iron on and let it steam the mixture out while shaking the iron gently (DO NOT BURN YOURSELF! STEAM IS HOTER THAN BOILED WATER!). Refill and Steam flush again with Clean water (distilled preferred). Repeat the steps until the rust has been completely dissolved (check by steam ironing on clean pieces of disposible kitchen paper towel. Use the Power steam or Flush function of the Iron if available.

you have probably solved this by now but I just got the same model new switch on instructions as follows press and HOLD the POWER button for 3 seconds to switch the unit on once temperature has been reached, press and HOLD the steam button on top of the iron for up to 20 seconds this will prime the steam pump and only has to be done once for each ironing session the pump noise will stop once it has been primed with water hope this helps if still needed if you need the user guide, let me know, I'll scan it for you Wendy
Scale buildup is unseating the rubber seal. Disassemble the iron. (Water filler hole part pulls directly forwards and can be pushed out from behind with a screwdriver.) Otherwise it's fairly straightforward. Clean scale off baseplate. Seal with silcone gasket before reassembly.
SELF CLEANINGIt is important to “Self Clean” the iron at least every two weeksto remove scale, calcium, etc. The harder the water, the more often the iron should be self cleaned.1. Set the variable steam control dial to any steam position.2. Fill the water tank up to the “MAX” level.3. Stand the iron on its heel. Plug the iron into the electrical outlet.4.Press the electronic temperature control button until you get the “MAX” temperature setting on the display panel and wait until the iron heats up and temperature setting light stops flashing.5. Turn the variable steam control dial all the way to the right to the self-cleaning position and hold the iron horizontally over the sink (Fig. 8).6. Boiling water and steam will now be ejected from the holes in the soleplate. The impurities and scale are washed away with it. 7. Move the iron back and forth as this happens.8. If there is any water left in the water tank after the iron stops steaming, just empty the remaining water in a sink following the instructions for emptying the iron. 9.Turn the variable steam control dial to the “0” position when the water tank is empty.10.Place the iron back upright on its heel to cool down before storing.
Fill the iron with equal parts white vinegar and distilled water. Place an oven rack over your sink and position the iron on top, with the steam vents facing down. Plug in the iron and turn it to the steam setting. Run it until the steam stops.
Once you have filled up with water and always just below full line, if your model has one, you need to press the "reset" or "restart" button on the back end of the generator (the end furthest away from the water container). Also, do be sure to regularly descale as advised above otherwise the water/steam can't get through.
