Is the cartridge empty? If so you will need to replace it with a new one.

It will have two chambers, one at the rear with a sponge in it and one at the front where the liquid ink is stored. Once the ink runs out in the front chamber a sensor detects this and the printer knows it is out of ink.

if :
Red paper.jpg paper and red inkout1.jpg ink light flash alternately and green power.jpg power light is off possible problem: Paper may be blocking movement of the print head. Turn off the printer, then open the cover and remove any jammed paper or other foreign objects. Turn the printer back on again. The green flashing light lets you know that the machine is recieving data. This is completely normal, however, the red (Attention) light can mean several things. There can be a door open, missing toner cartridge, out of paper, or paper jam. In this cause it is probably the toner cartridge. Typically on these machines there is an Orange or Green tab on the side of the toner cartridge that needs to be pulled to fully engage the cartridge. You may want to make sure this has been pulled and the cartridge has been properly seated.

Hope this helps...let me know if you need any further assistance

Flashing red light

On the alarm and data light blinking, it is saying the toner cartridge is empty. You will need to replace it. Once in a while you can remove the toner cartridge and shake it and have it work for a little while longer. This does not work all the time however.
If you can't get it to work by shaking it, you will need to purchase a new toner cartridge.

When you have the new cartridge, you will need to slide the blue corona wire cleaner back and forth. This is just in front of the toner cartridge in the drum unit on the top of the drum unit. There is a small light blue colored piece of plastic with an arrow in it that you will just push back and forth. This will help the drum unit do its job better.
