McQuay PTAC stops working after short time

Sounds like you need a new control board with thermistors. you probably have a relay that is getting hot and quitting.

Most window air conditioners run the fan all the time but cycle on and off the compressor that makes it blow cold air, I knew a AC that was a small Hunter Bay brand (which I think is LG) that shut fan off also when it reached the right temperature.

Hard to test them in winter, you may not have it warm enough in the room for it to start making cold air, generally speaking that could be the problem.

Are there any routine annual maintenance steps? Some portable ACs require the coolant to be replaced or recharged periodically. Sometimes the AC runs without cooling even though the thermostat is set...

Hi on any a/c, portable or central air units, they never need to change the freon in them, it is good for life. They may develop a leak and need to be recharged, but the system is sealed, and no, you will never need to change it. As far as the controls, it sounds as though you have a fan only setting, and when it does cool, you are in the fan/cool mode, compressor running.I would have to see the switch myself to educate you on it, but if the fan is on, and no cooling, its a setting that is used to let the air only circulate. As far as service on the unit, if it has a filter, change or keep it clean if it is washable. Make sure the coils evaporator in front, and the condenser in rear are cleaned, by brushing the dirt and dust build up. It will then last you for many years. I hope this has been of help to you.

My lg wall unit (LWHD1009R) 10,000 btu the compressor keeps turning off after it gets going. even though I have it on a low temp. the comressor turns off after 5-10 minutes even though the room is not cold

either going off on low charge which would cause it to ice up, which means you need refrigerant. or high head pressure might just have to clean the coils or check condensor fan.

LG PTAC, compressor seems to work but fan isn't blowing

LG Has a Technical Service Bulletin for this issue. The original fan motors were too small and the motor windings burnt out. GOOD LUCK getting them to replace it though!! I was told by LG that the TSB extended the warranty so the repair would be covered. I have been waiting and fighting for 2 1/2 months though......they keep sending out the wrong or incomplete parts!! I am ready to go back to Amana or GE Zoneline.

Noisy indoor air conditioning units

Ok. So first things first. LG have a reputation with all their products. THEY ARE ALL BAD! If you remember GoldStar, they are now LG. GoldStar had horrible products. Now this is what LG has. The fact that the filters are cleaned and the units are serviced is an abosulte plus and will provide the units with extra longevity. Now are these drains are they used for water drainage. If so the upstairs units shouldn't need them unless there is some sort of rise in the drain pipe.

Now to the noise. It seems like there is something which is causing the fan to make a noise. It could be loose bearing or a piece of the fan which has broken away causing it to hit the inside of the unit. Since it is on both units, it would be a generic problem with this series and unfortunately is what you are stuck with now.

To combat this problem, I would: ring LG and the company who installed them and demand that they be repaired and have a warranty on the repairs. Just a heads up, LG are really bad to contact should you have a complaint, so keep persisting that they be repaired free of charge since that they are still under warranty.

If you are not happy with LG or your installers response, I would remove the units and have another brand put in. I recommend Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Panasonic. Both units are whisper quiet. In fact they are quieter that the LG.

Oh and that only reason why LG boast about their "whisper quiet-ness" is because that is probably the only good going for them - and thats' not even right!

I hope that I have helped you in some way. Good Luck!

How to best run this thing

Hi Laurelrobin,
When the unit is on "low fan", it is fan only, and is recirculating room air. If the damper is open, it can also bring in outside air. If the space is not occupied for extended periods, it's OK to turn the unit "OFF", as long as you have a newer unit with Heat Sentinel, and the Heat Sentinel is turned on. Heat Sentinel will not let the room temp get above 85F, as long as the unit is OFF. Also, in most cases it's best to keep the damper closed. You can check your owner's manual for more info on the Heat Sentinel and other auxiliary functions. I also have an article on the temperature limiting functions of the GE Zoneline.
