Question about Hitachi 53SWX10B 53" Rear Projection Television
Hello, I know next to nothing in terms of TV tech. Today I saw this Hitachi 53SWX10B in a driveway with a sign saying it was free. I talked to the owners and they said it just needed a part, and if I knew someone who can fix TVs I would be set. So I took it and now am trying to do some homework before I go to a local repair shop. It appears in good condition, sound is good, and picture is better than I was expecting being that they were just giving it away. The first pic is the Hitachi, the second is another TV showing the same screen, showing how it should look.
I would greatly appreciate: A) if someone can tell what is wrong with the TV from the pic, and/or B) what I should expect to pay for quality repair. Anything you think I would benefit from knowing, I would also appreciate. Thanks much!
Your TV has a convergence problem. Here are some of the most common symptoms.
Here is a quick test....
Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence or magic focus section.
Try to adjust the convergence.
You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.
If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.
Its a fairly easy fix on the Hitachi sets.
You can get a repair kit that includes all the parts from www.TvRepairKits.com. The kit includes a photo instruction guide, original Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, etc.
Everything you need to fix it yourself.

A convergence amp has failed. Very common. Plan on just
replacing both STK modules (big flat circuit modules mounted on a big
heat sink) with upgraded parts. Good ones cost about $40
each. Then readjust the convergence. Total cost at a shop
Hope Ya Fix It.
