You can find the version of Firefox you are using by going to Help > About Mozilla Firefox when inside the browser. Firefox usually prompts for upgrades, but on limited or old versions of Linux such as that on the Eee PC 701 (Xandros, to be specific), that doesn't always work. Check out the Add/Remove Software utility under Settings for updates.
Check if your XP installer has service pack 2. If not download and install service pack 2 on support.microsoft.com. Service pack 2 automatically comes with USB 2.0.
Unfortunately Xandros is a paid (yes, you have read correctly , PAID) Linux distro. You will have to pay to get a Live-USB to reinstall. Instead you should go here http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,46097.0.html and follow the instructions to create your own PCLinuxOS (the one i use) Live-USB. You will need another pc for that. After booting from it all you're gonna have to do is to click on the Install icon on the desktop.
Try starting it up in safe mode and see if you can get in. If you can, then it is a driver issue and you may want to check you have the correct drivers. If you continue to get the issue, it could be a hardware issue and you should get the computer checked out.
Most 701 models came with a web cam built in. You can install an external one easily.. just plug it in to the usb port.
Previous poster is wrong... why would you need a Cd drive ? You could either download the drivers from the webcam maker's website, or simply copy the file from the CD to a SD card with another computer. If you have a home network setup, you could simply copy the files via network file sharing.
If you have the linux version of the EeePC 701, then make sure you buy a compatible webcam that has drivers in linux.
