Question about Samsung HCM4215W 42" Rear Projection Television
My Samsung HCM4215W stopped turning on. Went to turn it on one day, got no picture and heard high pitched noises and then the unit just wouldn't respond to the power button unless I unplugged it and plugged it back in. I think it was activating some failsafe or something so i didn't mess with it much more.
I found someone who was having similar problems and followed techman's advice and unplugged the convergence board and tried turning the TV on. It turned on just fine so I continued to follow the advice offered in that article and ordered replacment STKs and installed them.
The TV turns on with the convergence board plugged in now, but it has a dip in the middle (kind of like a U shape but very gentle). The green convergence lines are straight both vertically and horizontally and so are the red ones, it's just the blue that won't straighten out.
Time to order a new convergence board? Any advice? Thanks in advance.
P.S. it seems the STKs are getting really hot, really quickly, possibly more so than normal (i don't know how hot they're supposed to get). If that helps diagnose the problem any.
These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.
When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.
