There needs to be an additional instruction. I am having the same problem. From standby mode, I press Intercom, the screen says "Please wait" for 2-3 seconds, then I choose a handset. Nothing happens. The user guide doesn't have any additional instructions after this point. I don't hear any paging or anything other than silence on any handset.

I understand this is a Uniden phone. To give exact instructions regarding this issue we would ideally need the model number as there may be some variation in the procedure between models.
I have provided a link to a manual which contains generic instructions for Uniden and this may suffice as most models use the same procedures (see pages 21 and 22). If the instructions do not tally with your phone please provide the exact model number and I will endeavour to find more precise instructions for you.
Download and view pages 21 and 22 of this manual

The Instruction Book for GE Telephone model 29460 (29460GE2-A) can be found on the Thomson site (www.thomsonnetwork.com). Follow the instructions on the home page. On the page with links click on the 5th link for the full 92 page booklet (46 pages are in Spanish or French depending on which link you use). IB in the link stands for Instruction Book. QIG in the earlier links stands for the one-page Quick Installation Guide
This indicates a disconnection of service or a cross in the wiring.
Have you done or had done any wiring changes?
Have you move anything around or disconnected anything recently?
Something has changed to get a USB error. Unless you have been disconnected for non-payment.
