Try Uninstalling the driver & restart the system & Try Updating the device driver from support.dell.com And also try this work well for more people
To resolve this problem, remove the affected filter drivers. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in thePrograms list.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
  2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
  3. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
  4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
  5. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
  6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
  7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

My laptop doesnt have the cd drive. It doesnt read my cd or dvd..

If you have more than one computer and other computer has dvd drive or cd drive you may use it by networking this computer to that one! You may also by external cd/dvd drive for your computer as well which may be easier!

Toshiba cd-r/rw drive reads but doesnt write

I checked out the specs for that drive. It only reads dvds/cds.
I see that it has no cd/dvd writing capabilities.

All the cd's you used may still be blank

Do you have another drive you can try out?

look for a yellow exclamation point or red X where the cd-rom is.
high light the cd-rom

windows will detect and re-install the cd-rom drive.
try a cd

if that doesnt work update windows

also buy a cd-rom cleaner at your local electronics store

Dvd combo

Did you try axcessing the drive manually ??? Start > My computer > D:(you cd drive),, If it doesnt show up then the drive may be damamged. If it does you just need to associate the .ext with a program. Double click on the drive if a option box doesnt open up, you should see the audio files.. just right click on one and select properties. You should see the program the file is associated with. Just click change and select another program.

DVD writer, master drive

If you have both the DVD and CD drives connected to the same ribbon cable you want one set to Master and the other to Slave, or both set to CS (cable select). Good luck.

Not working

Is the drive connected propperly ?
look at the jumper settings if its IDE

if it is connected propperly and still doesnt show up
( verify its showing up in My COMPUTER)
try it on anoter PC to see if it works.

Just cause its new doesnt mean it works

If it works and you did connect it propperly the let me know

IS IT READING ANYTHING ?
Is IT SHOWING UP IN YOUR DEVICE MANGER?

Click START, (right Click) my computer, select properties then device manager, it shoud show up in DVD/CD-ROM drives
if it doesnt then right click on anything and scan for hardware changes. If it doesnt show up then it isnt connected propperly.
