Printer driver vs standby

My Dell GX240 will not go to standby (S3) automatically unless I disable the HP P1000 serial printer.

Actually, I finally stumbled on to the fix for this problem. A few months ago I started going through peripherals and disabling them one at a time to try to find the culprit, (My Computer/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/your device here) but having little time to deal with it, gave up the chase for the time being.

Yesterday I disabled my HP1000 printer and waited for the preset time to standby. Lo and behold - standby executed!

After re-enabling said device, the standby function is still performing as it should. A bit got sideways somewhere and was reset by cycling it in and out of service. Go figger.

'Hope this was of help to someone.

Update for: "printer driver vs Standby" post - my fix worked until yesterday when I updated WinXP. Now it's back to staying awake.

Originally, I found that if I disable the parallel P1000 printer - Voila, standby (S3 mode) works.

Now, since the update, my disable printer/reboot/enable printer /reboot process doesn't apply. Arrgghh!!

    Any ideas?

I believe this to be my final post on the printer driver vs Standby problem.

Once again, Standby is functional. I totally uninstalled the P1000 printer; driver, related software, turned off the PC, disconnected the printer and rebooted.

I then re-installed the driver and software package;3511_enu_w2k_xp_release.exe, available online. Once I connected the printer and turned it on, it set itself up. The PC then went to Standby as scheduled in Power Options and has done so several times since.

Once again, I hope this helped someone solve the same problem.

After finding that all "fixes" I tried for this driver problem were either temporary or didn't work at all, I have finally found a piece of freeware that took care of it and it is also quite unobtrusive as to resources.

The program is called CO2 Saver and one place it can be found is at It takes minimal setup. I selected "aggressive" mode and chose to execute much sooner than the default time. It's been working for several days now without a hitch.
During the install it will ask you to choose a search engine as the default for its tool bar. I think I declined a few other settings it suggested. Then I simply went to the desktop icon, activated it and minimized its info bar to the task bar. It works for me on my GX240 - finally - no thanks to HP.

Indeed this seems rather odd, and also a inconvenience. However, after following up with some research I found following Microsoft Knowledge Base. In a nutshell, any one of the following may cause Standby mode not to function properly becasue of this printer: device drivers, a program running in the background which interferes with Standby mode, or a BIOS Power Saving setting which needs to be enabled. So you may have to continue disabling the printer, or contact the hardware manufacturer from the printer to find out if any updates are coming to resolve that odd issue.

My usb mouse is not working

James it would help if you told us what operating system you are using; however:
>Power down your computer.
>Unplug the power cord and wait for one (1) minute.
>Re-plug and Restart your computer normally.
If this does not work:
>Enter Device Manager in Control Panel
>Disable (do not remove) all USB ports (called "Universal Serial Bus") in Windows7 bu Right click once on each, then "disable".
>Reboot your computer, Windows will automatically re-enable them.
..if you still have a problem, then re-enter Device Manager and manually re-enable them, but I don't think you will have to do that.

My desktop is not finding the cd rom hardware plz help it tried 2 cd romz but non was recognized plz help i use xp service 3 dell optiplex gx240

If you have the power cable connected to the cdrom and the data cable (ide or sata) then as long as the cd rom drive is working it should be detected automatically. If the back of the cdrom has a jumper make sure it is set to cable select. Finally go into bios (hit F2 when you see the Dell Logo) and see if there is a setting to enable the cdrom drive. It may have been disabled for some reason. If these fail then its possible the cd drive is bad.

I don't think you would need any drivers for Ubuntu

Santosh i want to download drevers for gx240 video

Here's the link to the Dell driver download page for your GX240 computer:

There are 3 options of VGA driver for your machine type, so you may have to download more than one before you get the correct driver.

I hope that helps.

  1. uninstall the software for the printer and disable the firewall in the control panel and disable the antivirus program ( be sure to enable them back into service when finished loading the printer software back in)
  2. reload software and reboot computer this will automatically enable your antivirus.
  3. then re able your firewall
  4. then try your printer again and see if this solves the problem. if not go and you may find something else there more helpful biigg53566

It means the driver for your video card is not allowing the system to enter standby (power save mode). This is an information message and is not a big error unless you really need to be in standby.

You have 2 possible solutions:

1) Scour the internet looking for and updated driver. These may work:

2) Disable system standby in windows: In control pane, select power options, then unselect the option for system standby.
