Garage Door Remote Not Working Consistently

We are having an issue with a Sears Craftsmen Garage door opener where the remote will only work either very close to the house or intermittantly at a distance. We have changed batteries, re-"learned" the remotes by resetting the codes and by trying a different remote. One of the safety sensors is showing a yellow light but it is in line with the other remote. The garage door opener is working fine from the manual button.

    same problem

  • Anonymous Mar 08, 2008

I have a 1 year old Sears Garage Door Opener that the remotes work for a few weeks and then gradually quit working at any distance, except for a few feet away from the motor. I have replaced batteries, "re-learned" remotes several times. I even unhooked the logic board and rehooked it back up. The remotes will work for a few weeks more and then quit working again.......................

I replaced the worn gear in December, my remote worked for a couple weeks after that. Now I have to hold the remote really close along with the other garage door open. It is the same with my Homelink in the car. Is the problem with the logic board or something else.

Opens from the inside and only from the outside very close to the door! Damn Craftsmen! They want me to buy a sensor for the outside and run an extenion cord to it!? IDK?

My father-in-law has the same problem...you have to put the garage door opener/closer 2 inches from the opener for it to open or close the door...replacing the batteries in the remotes don't work (we have 2 remotes).

    Any ideas?

I have a Lift Master garage opener and the remotes stopped working from outside the same day as my neighbor. Someone in the area must have installed a new satelite or something that is causing the interference.

Intersesting reading these problems.I have 3 Craftsman door openers and all work like ****. I have 1 Chamberlin and I can open the door from 150 ft to 200 ft away.

  • Anonymous Nov 16, 2008

My door works fine and the remotes will trigger the door but only from inside the garage--not very helpful! The keypad entry also will only work just a few feet from the motor unit but no further. My question is whether it is in the keypad or in the sensor in the motor housing.

We have the same problem. We called the support line and the person on the phone indicated this was a known problem and that there was a fix, and so we had to wait two weeks for someone to come out (yesterday, 12/16) and confirm that there's a problem. He said that we could order another mother board but in his experience it only fixes it 50% of the time. So we decided to return it. My husband then bought one from Home Depot, the Chamberlain, not realizing that it's the same inside and had the exact same problem. So now he's going to see what else is available.

No matter what frequency you have you can do some things to limit the interference. Make sure your antenna wire is hanging down and free. Make sure there is nothing between the antenna wire and the garage door. The wire should be at least 6 to 8 inches long. You can try adding more length by stripping the insulation back on the antenna wire and another peice of copper wire about the same gauge. Twist the ends together and put some electrical tape over them. See how this works.

Chamberlain still makes the 390 MGHZ reciever, i just order it today.

I think one person is confused about the frequency interference problem. 390 megahertz is to be avoided because the military and homeland security started using this frequency in 2004. They have exclusive rights to this frequency so switching to 310, 315 or 318 megahertz will eliminate this particular problem but may not help out with other forms of interference. No one is manufacturing 390 MGHZ any longer.

Had the same problem with my hormann door. Realised that it was our Tomy baby monitor causing the interference. Performed a simple test, baby monitor switched on = garage door does not respond to remote from a distance. Baby monitor switched off = all working fine!

I purchased a Overhead garage door opener 2 years ago, and it has both 315 and 390 megahertz. I don't know about military/homeland security stuffs you said, but the company do recommended to use 390 megahertz if 315 is weaker due to interferences.

Had and still have the same problem. Sears refuses to fix, but acknowledged that the problem is caused by rf interference with their 315 mhz frequency use by motion sensors, etc... They will not post this on a web site or any advertisement. They will not put in any manual, nor do they have any fix. I took off and threw out a motion sensor on my light and innitially fixed the problem. I recently installed a water fountain bird bath with six small LED lights in a front garden, which shut down my remotes AND my home links in my cars. The probl;em has been isolated to the LED lights! Sears advised that Chamberlain makes their garage door openers. Chamberlain blamed the water fountain manufacturer. Both refused to fix. I am switching to a Genie which operates at 390 mhz.

A lot of time the reason the remote works close, but not far away is the radio wave. Anything that you plug into a wall, will give out its own radio wave, even a light bulb. Now if you have anything close to the same frequency it will jam out the remotes. You can try changing out the logic board, or make your anti wire longer, by just splicing it with any wire.

If you are sure the battery is good then try to program the remote by holding the button down on the remote and then pressing and immediately releasing the smart/learn button. If this doesn't work and you have another remote that does work then the remote has quit working.

Cannot re-program remote transmitters for garage door opener

If both remotes quit at or about the same time then it is most likely the receiver that has quit. Especially if you have had electrical storms in the area. The receiver is part of your logic board.

Unfortunately storms do bad things so door openers sometimes. It has most likely gotten to your logic board. You can remove that board and look for burnt or missing traces of the print. Random flashing of that LED is normal.

Garage Door Remote Not Working Consistently

Replacing 315 with 390 OR 390 with 315? I had same problem which went away on its own. Did you buy any new electrical or electronic products just before problem started? I had this with a customer who had electrical interference from within house or a neighbor's satelite dish. You can try turning off breakers one at a time to isolate circuit causing problem .
