My vacuum had this exact same problem, but was out of warranty because it was remanufactured. Thankfully, it's a very quick, five-minute fix.

  1. UNPLUG The Vacuum!
  2. Remove the cannister.
  3. Extend the handle and remove it.
  4. Remove the two torx (T-15) screws behind the power button, where the handle normally stows.
  5. There are four tabs holding the front plate containing the power button on; use your screwdriver to release them.
  6. Gently pull the front plate off.
  7. The switch on the right is the power button. Remove it, try clicking it a few times; if it sticks, great! Replace it and reassemble, otherwise you'll need to replace it.

The power button on my Dyson DC19T2 won't stay on

The switch is broken. If you are handy, remove the old switch and match it up at a hardware store or a Vacuum repair shop. It shouldn't cost much to have it replaced by a proffessional either.

My dyson will not stay on when i press the button.

OK...so while I'm sure that hitting the power button w/ a mallet will work...I was having the same issue and felt uncomfortable hitting my very expensive Dyson w/ a mallet.
Here is what I did to fix the problem I have a DC17...I am sure instructions will vary by model Here is what you will need: 1. flat head screw driver 2. Torx -15 screw driver.
1. remove the dust tank  2.Pull the extension tube (handle) out (as if you were going to  vacuum a tight area.  3. there are 2 torx screws that you will have to remove 4. there are 4 retaining clips that you will use the flat head screw driver to unlatch.   5. After you remove the torx screws and release the 4 retaining clips, the front panel (that houses the power button) can be removed.  6. This will expose the actual power button itself.  Most likely it was jammed. 7. Once you think you have fixed it...test out your fix. 8.  If fixed...reassemble
