when you put your windows cd does it recognize it than sorry :( I was being geeky sometimes it is hard to tell what background knowledge do you have :D

  • Goran Veletic Feb 07, 2008

what you need in bios is to put CD as 1st boot device than restart your computer and after that is should ask you to boot from CD, of course you do not need, but if it asks you than you CD rom is fine but that would tell us that your windows is bad :(:

My cd drive will read cds but wont read as a burner

Not all Inspirons have CD burners (the 4 factory options were CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, and DVD/CD-RW. You can confirm that via Windows Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager and double click on DVD/CD-ROM drives to see what model drive you have, then just Google it to see what it's capable of.

In case you have either a CD-RW type drive or a DVD/ CD-RW drive and it doesn't want to burn CD's , then it's a bad drive.

Cd/dvd rom cd not working

I would first suggest to clean the drive with a cleaning disc, can be purchased at any electronics store, it's a cd with microfober brushes on it that cleans the drive as this disc spins.

Using acer aspire 5315.. cd rom recognises cds but will not burn onto blank cds or recognise blank cds, laptop ued to burn cds, and not doesnt.

Are you able to read CD's and DVD's using the Optical Drive ?If yes, then it may be a problem with the lens in the drive. It can also be an issue with the software that you are using to burn Cd's ( like Nero ).If you are not able to Read and write Cd's or DVD's and the Optical drive isnot listed in " My Computer" then it can be either a driver issue or registry filters issue.Let me know abt this

Cd rom problem

Try to play different cds from your dvd rom drive.
If all of them does play then i suspected the cd that you had inserted to play is faulty.

If all of the cds doesn't work, re-install your dvd rom driver. If it doesn't still read any cds then your dvd rom drive is faulty.

Note: If machine is under warranty no need to pay for the repairs.

Hi there

Will first of all is it a dvd rom/ cd rom drive or just a dvd rom, because you cant use cds in dvd drives! Second of all, make sure your driver is fully updated, it might be missing something that it needs that will fix the problem after you update it!

Boot cd-rom type:cd-rom/non-emulation booting

No, it's because Microsoft changed the way boot CDs work with SP2. You need an old CD (Windows XP SP1). I had the same problem here, notebook without floppy, it won't boot from the newer XP version CDs (SP2 or SP3) - but an old SP1 CD works!
(Those were all original Microsoft CDs, and the SP2 / SP3 CDs boot just fine on several other PCs I tested. It's just that some old hardware has a problem with the boot mode used on newer Windows CDs.)
