My Hayward H400 lights up fine And heats up but

It lights and i've ran it for hours with only a slight change in water temp. It occasionaly stops "heating" and I have to relight it. I domt want to waste gas if somethings not right. It seems like the water isn't getting heated properly or something. I just moved into a house with this so I've never dealt with it before.

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

When you say 'relight it', what do you mean? Poor water flow would lead to the unit overheating in time and it would shut down; explaining both your symptoms as well. Perhaps you need to clean the filter or if it is a cartridge filter, replace the element inside. If that is not the issue you will likely want to hire a professional. Things like taking gas pressure readings are best done by someone in the know. If you have the tools and ability, please reply and we can try to walk you through the process.

If this answer does not fix your problem, please comment with additional details prior to rating the answer. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

I have a Hayward H400 pool heater. I don’t heat my pool so I never use it but I do turn it on once or twice a year for about five minutes to make sure it’s working, which right now it fires up just fine. ...

Call a qualified electrician. More information would be needed to accurately trouble shoot your issue. Do you have automation connected to your heater? Is the heater trying to fire when the pump is off or is it ONLY the fan?
Try disconnecting your Water Pressure switch on the heater and see if the issue stops. With WP switch disconnected the heater should not work and the fan should stay off. Replace WP switch and see what happens.

Hi,
There are two things that can cause this...
low water flow
mineral build up in heat exchanger

Check and verify water flow through the heater

if that is ok, then the heat exchanger needs to be cleaned

My heater keeps shuting off

Several legit reasons for a pool heater to shut off: Requested Temp has been reached; Heat time has expited (you have it go on and off at certain times of the day); Low system pressure (usually due to filter that needs back washed) or you turned the pump off. The heater will not run if there is no water flow. On the other hand, you MIGHT have a faulty pressure switch. To prove, short it out. Remove the leads on the switch (inside upper right) and place a shorting wire in the clips. If it continues to run and you are CERTAIN there is sufficient pressure, replace the switch.

I suspect the heater is fine since it continues to light.

Allheaters run off of a thermostat just like the heat to your house. It will shut off once heated to the selected temperature. Turn up the temperature, and monitor it for a couple days.

Temp on water boils in heater core

This will be a water flow problem. If you have a heater by-pass it will need to be almost closed (80-90%) If the water has overheated you may need to remove the header going into the heater and replace the internal by-pass assembly.
