Randomly Shuts Off

My laptop is plugged in and it seems the AC power is fully functional. The most frequent times that it shuts off are when there is a CD inserted in the computer, or I am playing an online game, such as Guild Wars. I have no clue why this happens, and it is very frustrating. I am even using a Targus cooling unit, set under my laptop. Someone please help! My Pavilion zd8000 Notebook randomly shuts down when left unattended for any length of time. As long as I am working on it it will stay up, but if I step away just to take a phone call...CRASH! I lose my work I lose whatever I was working on.
It is really annoying.
I am thin king this could be a bios problem,

    Hi,
I do have XP and I went into my screen saver power settings as you suggested. I was not offered anything that said power saver (checked or unchecked), but I was offered settings for hibernating etc. that I had already previously accessed through Power Options in the Control Panel. I have been fooling with those things for days.
I do think that the probelem may relate to the Screen Saver, because sometimes when the machine doesn't crash it will simply FREEZE on the screen saver. I then have to hold down the On/Off switch and crash it myself to get out. It won't let me go to the shut down screen.
    Thanks for your help,

The three top apps. for CPU & Memory usage are:

    AZVENA.scr (CPU25,Mem Usage:54,688
firefox (CPU=02, MU=128,112) constantly shifts while in use.
    svchost.exe (CPU=0, MU = 31,228)

One thing I did that seems to have helped somewhat is that I uninstalled AOL Instant Messenger. I have nothing but problems with AOL software, and I always immediately suspect they are the culprit in times like these.

Probably some applications in background taking excessive CPU resources. Please click on Ctrl+Alt+Del to open Task manager and go to Processes tab, locate sort the applications by CPU and Memory usage, and tell me top 3 for CPU and Mem usage so I can figure out next steps for you

Then click on screen saver at the bottom click change power settings. Now if the power saver is checked then uncheck it and choose balanced in that change the timings as when it should sleep according to ur wish.

My toshiba laptop restarts randomly when it plugged.,and again restarts sometimes it will shut off .but no problem occurs when in batterry power.please help me to solve this problem.

Many models of Toshiba Satellite laptops have a capacitor called NEC/TOKIN Proadlizer which loses its capacitance with time and hence laptop freezes, shuts down or restarts when AC is plugged in. One needs to replace this cap as shown here:

I have ac adapter plugged into the wall, and into the computer, the charge pack light is green, the battery is in the computer and the computer won't turn on at all

You probably have a bad or loose DC jack on the laptop:

Problem symptoms:

  1. Laptop randomly shuts down without any warning.
  2. Power LED and battery charge LED start flickering when you wiggle the power cord or the AC adapter tip on the back or your laptop.
  3. The battery will not get charged.
  4. When you plug AC adapter, the laptop appears to be dead and there is no LED activity at all (DC-IN jack on the system board is broken).

Power is erratic. Shuts off randomly.

it could be caused by a lot of things. isolate it first. since its randomly shutting down, try first in normal mode. does it heats up before it turns off, if yes its an overheating issue. you may need to replace fan or even motherboard of your pc. have you checked your battery? is it properly seated? or is the problem happening when your system is plugged with the ac adapter? try to check the power cable.

Randomly shuts off and takes many times to try to

Take out the battery and only have the ac adapter hooked up. If you can get it to turn on the first try then that means the battery is shorting out the motherboard.

If you do this and your still having power problems then that means the motherboard is starting to go bad on you and the motherboard would have to be replaced.

Emachine Turns Off

This is the best way to tell. If your system is shutting down on you by behaving like your shutting it down thru windows then it could be a spyware, virus trojan issue going on. If thats the case then run your virus program and see what it finds and remove it. If your laptop is shutting down on you where everything turns off right away with no lights, kind of like a power outage then go ahead and remove the battery and only use the ac adapter and see if that solves the problem. If it does solve the problem then you know its your battery that is the culprit. If your only using the ac adapter and the machine shuts off on you like a power outage with no lights then you know its a problem with the motherboard. With just the ac adapter plugged in, wiggle the cord near where it plugs into the laptop and if it shuts off on you like a power outage then you know its a loose DC Jack and it needs to be resoldered back into place. Hope all this helps.

My Averatec 3200 turns of randomly...

Check the CPU and Fan/Heatsink assembly. I have a pretty good feeling that the CPU is heating up too much and is not being cooled properly. There may be lint or dust clogged in the fan. You can get access to this pretty easy by removing a few screws on the bottom panel that houses the CPU/fan.

Laptop shutting off

This problem has happened to me on several occasions. I found that the connector that you plug your power supply into on the motherboard gets loose. Not making a good connection and like you said needs to be re soldered. Before attempting this, stick a small screwdriver in there and see if it's loose. If it is, then EVERYTHING needs to come off to get to it. Not a quick project. I suggest you take pictures along the way just in case. Good luck!
