Hi anternidrumm,

According to the site below, the drive can burn dual layers discs:

"The 20x DVD multi writer opens up new dimensions for flexible read and write functions. This high-performance DVD/CD-burner is able to read your DVDs at a speed of 16x and CDs at 48x. It also brings fascinating dynamics into play when writing your blank disks. Now it can even write DVD-R DL two layer media at 12x, while reaching a speed of up to 20x for DVD+R and DVD-R. DVD+R9 and DVD+RWs are processed at 8x and DVD-RWs at 6x. And DVD-RAM can be recorded with up to 12x DVD speed. So how fast can it burn my CDs, you might ask? Even here, with speeds of 48x (CD-R) and 32x (CD-RW), it’s at the top of its class."

Does not read or write dvd or cds

Let's start at step 1:
1: Is the drive listed in My Computer?
2: Have you checked the cables to insure they are plugged in firmly?
3: Has it always been this way or has it worked ok in the past?

Unable to push Sony Optiarc AD-7585H to write at 1x

You're not "pushing" with 1x speed, that's the slowest speed at which a burner will burn at. You can change the write speed in the burning software settings.

I dont' know if i can burn dual layer dvds with the optiarc 7561s

Here is a link to the specifications of your burner.

Look in the Technical Specs and under supported media format they have listed "dl".

If anything you may have a firmware update available. (you can check on this site for any available ones).

Hope this helps.

Windows vista updated and now my optiarc dvd rw drive won't work

You will have to uninstall the drive and reinstall again. I think the drivers for the drive is not properly installed. But if all this does not work, then I think you will have to do a system restore.

Best wishes
