When online(signed in) its in the option menu on the ps3 at the top it says update ps3. this should auto run the link for it. But ive had problems with my ps3 same as yours and it was the updates that caused the problem. so i think when you update it, it still wont read games. And you'll have to call sony for a replacement anyway.... hope this doesn't happen for you but i wouldn't hold my breath for the update to sort it

Sony BDP-BX2 Blu Ray player won't read disc. Do i need to update the firm ware? or something?

The latest update version is .008. Yes, you most likely need to do this. I have done two update so far. Ver. .006 and .008. Both times this solved my disc problem. On one of my disc for the newest version, I put the disc in and it could not read it. I was really surprise and put in back in again and it played. I've come to the conclusion that many disc pressing are not very good and some of the Blu-ray players are more finicky about reading that bad pressing. Exchanging the disc for another sometimes works.
